RS Edition, Sport or A N Other?

Postby eclipse » Wed Jan 02, 2019 9:52 pm

Hi all,

New to the forums as I’m currently in the market for a Custom. It’s only use will be camping trips with the wife and little person :) .

I’m looking to spend £14 - £16k (hopefully a little haggle room?) and have been looking at around the 2015 mark for Sports and RS Editions, however wondered if you could answer a few questions/give any more advice....I didn’t realise it was so difficult to find the right van! :P

1. What actually is the RS Edition 170, is it just a Sport with different styling (I’ve not found much info on the web about them)
2. Would it make more sense money wise to go for a newer, say 2017 Limited 150bhp model and customise it somewhat?
3. As I could be lugging about a load of camping gear and 3 people should I stay clear of the 125bhp, or will it be absolutely fine?

For info, a few I have looked at have been:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NO-VAT-2015- ... 2901830405 - now sold annoyingly as really liked that one.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Transit ... 3633916375 - standard Limited that’s been customised. Like it, but will go up I think and it’s a trek.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2015-15-FORD ... 3516106282 - These have quite a few for sale so may pop up and view a bunch.

Cheers.

All these rs,gt,sooper dooper, turbo, zillion hp vans are basically the same

Limited vans with plastic body kits, 90% aren’t even official ford models and have non approved mods and remaps etc. Some invalidate warranties.

Basically normal limited van a shellsuit.

Careful what you buy. I think the only real sporty ones around the 15plate age were sportvans, but I’m sure someone will correct me. :D

Thanks for the reply, Punto.

It it more often the case then that people will take a regular limited spec custom, throw a 1k plastic kit onto it and then charge an extra 3k for it?

You could buy a nice limited.....then some wheels off eBay and have change left over, as said before ford only did the sport and the m sport, rs / gt editions etc are all just standard vans with stickers and spoilers......I’ve even seen basic entry model vans done. They do look good though !

Thanks, Shaun.

I do like the RS Edition 170s, but also the official Sports from 2013 - 17 odd. Ideally I'm looking for a Limited van with 155bhp and a kit, or a Sport. I'm not sure how much haggling can be done on say an 18k van, but I'll report back if I have any success.

Interestingly I spotted a new listing on eBay last night for a 64 plate Custom Sport for £5,500, which I thought looks very shifty as it's a good 6, 7, 8k cheaper than anywhere else. I fired off a question to them (jocunni_29 / rosedavidjohn0@gmail.com) and the advert was removed from eBay without a reply. I then received a text message stating if I was still interested send a mail to them.

I thought I'd play along and asked some questions, i.e. previous owners, condition, where is the van located, if they'd be ok me sending an AA mechanic to inspect. They dodged them all, just stated they're in the Isle of Man and "we" only have two options - all of which was in somewhat broken English:

1. use escrow
2. use PayPal PAD (Pay After Delivery)

It's well known that scammers utilise fake escrow sites (Loyds instead of Lloyds etc) and PayPal PAD pays the seller immediately and does not cover motor vehicles of any sort.

Maybe they were legit, but I'd wager they're rip-off merchants  .

On a different note - with the 3 bhp models I'm looking at - 125, 155 & 170 is there a large performance difference between them? I assume you see a considerable jump from 125 to 170?

I'm going to head over to Wolves tomorrow to eye a few 2018 Limited vans and see if I can wangle any discounts for cash.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but would the euro 6, 2018 130PS vans give performance similar to the 2013 onward 155PS vans? I ask as from new you now can't get the Limited van with the middle engine, just the 130 or 170PS.

I'm also looking at the Limited as it doesn't really make too much sense to pay the extra ££, just for a body kit, stripes and some part leather seats to me..

Cheers.
