'Selectors' within the actual gear knob assembly?

Hi, this is for a 2.2 2013 Transit Custom van...

I'm trying to work out where these 'selector' pins / similar are within the gear change assembly, (under the gear knob), as I have been told, by a couple of people, that I should remove the gear stick knob and then the gaiter and then somewhere there are these 'selectors', 'pins' or whatever they are called.

They have said I need to do this so that gear changing would be smoother and this would also stop the 1st gear from jumping out, now and then.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks!
