Can anyone advise where to start

Postby dodgy01 » Thu Jun 06, 2019 2:44 pm

2014 custom. Last week I noticed occasionally on a hard turn it brought up a traction controll error

I’m assuming a loose wire to a abs sensor.

This morning there was the eml flickering with a message saying brake service now

The van would not start.
It’s done it again this afternoon. After a few turn on and off of the key it’s ok
Please can anyone help me with some advice.

Thanks

You need to get the wheel speed sensors on live data and record a session then go out and recreate the fault. If it does it on corners then most likely the front, suggesting a bearing if hard corners. Could be coincidence though.

There may be a fault code stored that will point you in the right direction.
My mk7 is showing front left sensor and the abs/esp are stuck on.

thanks for the reply loot
so I have found the fault code saying right front abs sensor short to earth

checked wiring ( visually) , checked plug and pulled the sensor and all seems ok

on live data its reading speed , all faults cleared , but there was also a no communication from brake system to bcm

but would this cause the van to refuse to start ?

thanks

@loot

so its progressed a little today

I think I have 2 separate faults , the abs sensor seems to be fine but today the flickering happened and broke service now cam up , But there was a relay under the bonnet going nutty
unfortunaty I had to take the key out to open bonnet then it never did it again
it was deff from inside the engine fuse box

any ideas please

Missed this. It shouldn't stop the engine running I don't think but i know the 2014 mk8 would do that on the faulty low fuel thing at least on one vehicle anyway. It does seem that the later vans are taking over if the fault is dangerous.

If you've cleared the fault and it isn't coming back but flickering then it has to be a dodgy wire surely?
The connector for the abs module has a clear grease on it I think a to keep the damp out. I often see no comms from the abs to bcm even on my custom that has no faults. I put it to the power down system configuration. It doesn't cause any issues and throws no lamps up.
Need more info on that to confirm.

The mk7 as said has the front sensor issue, I have a feeling that I might have a faulty abs module but until I check that out I can't help.

Not sure what else to suggest.
Have you got 2 batteries? The custom seems more hungry than the mk7.

thanks for the reply

there are still no fault codes to be read
but the relay in the fuse box was rattling like a nutter as was the eml light as it came up with brake service now

I can certailny clean the electrical plug on the abs unit and fill with silicon grease , I'm unsure that's the fault as it cleared after turning the ignition off and back on

thanks for your help

( on a side note I have a full set of injectors from my mk7 330 that where perfect , also I may have the pump if you need them for yours )
