OBD equipment

Postby aln101tf » Fri Aug 02, 2019 7:00 pm

Hello all,
2013 Custom Tourneo.
I do most work myself, so a decent OBD reader was required.
I bought a mid range Sealey at about £140, which gives a code description, not just the code.
My Custom developed a fault apparently with the ABS.
ABS lamp, Traction lamp, and airbag lamp illuminated, and Speedo died.
My OBD showed no codes logged or pending. A bit surprising?
Got my local garage to read it with his "expensive" machine. "Right front wheel sensor". Surely this is a standard code which any reader should show, and not a maker specific one?
I'm a bit peeved that my reader didn't get something as basic.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Anyone recommend a more professional reader, without spending oodles of cash?
Maybe this should have gone in the technical section, but I thought it may be a Custom issue.

Obd2 compliance only relates to the engine and emission stuff.
Other modules are not legally required.
Your fault was abs and manufacturer specific.

Your equipment is a legitimate 1 so needs to be legal and is limited :(

So you need a dodgy kit like ids clone 100gbp+ or forscan free (needs modified elm327 dongle about 15 quid)
56 350 2.2 130ps mk7 with 2 side doors 8)
65 290 2.2 125ps custom with 2 side doors 8)
07 350 170ps

Blast....then its about as much good as a chocolate fireguard, regardless of quality?
I've read a bit about forscan, and needing a genuine elm327.
I take it that ids clone would do it all?

I might seem a bit thick here, but I'm old
I've had a look about online and am now more confused.

There is a lot of "elm327" type dongles out there including software for £20, which don't mention Forscan. Is it still Forscan that they're using and would they do the job?
Or should I be downloading the Forscan software and then getting an ELM327 dongle to connect it?

What's needed to have the IDS system? Is that a case of buying cloned software and a dongle to connect?
I'd like to be able to alter vehicle settings such as "hill start assist", "throttle jacking" etc if possible. Would Forscan do this?

I could then do with a point in the direction of a suitable source.

Ids comes with the hardware and software, it is Ford specific, expensive and can be arse to install and get working, you need to be computer savvy or know someone who is. There are different software versions and different installation methods too.
The market is full of clones all of which have varying levels of quality.

The sp177. C1 is my recommended hardware. Not the cheapest though.

You'll be able to do most things but not pats stuff like keys or module installation but will do configuration and fault code reading etc.

Forscan is independently created software that you get online free.

Elm 327 is the brand of obd reader and will usually not be tied to a specific software and may in fact come with a generic software that is universal but basic.

This is mine.

Ok Loot.
Thanks, that helps a good bit.
I'll try the ELM / Forscan direction first and see how it goes.
