Sync 3 stereo retrofit

Postby DannyFlex » Sun Nov 03, 2019 12:26 pm

Hi

I’ve just bought a 2018 euro 6 transit custom
It has the built in dab head unit.

Does anyone know if you can retrofit a Ford sync 3 unit?

Thanks

I’ve fitted a sync display and audio unit from a Fiesta in my 68 plate Custom. Programmed with Forscan and it all works

Hi

Replied to your PM

You’ll need a screen.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254530114693

And a AHU like this that doesn’t need an APIM. You’ll need to cut off the extra brackets that aren’t needed.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254665585106

You need to keep the link cable that’s connecting your current display to the AHU

It’ll work with out changing any settings, however to get it perfect it’ll need configured for a Transit using ForScan or similar

So.....

New to the forum and just bought a 2018 L2H1 trend 130 and want to upgrade the stereo/satnav features.

Can the sync 3 screen (H1BT-188955] be swapped in to the existing head unit (Jk2T18D832BL) or, for the new sync3 screen to work does the head unit need to be changed as well? (To JK2T-18C815)

And does this then need to be formatted with Fortrans?

If so who do I need to find that can do this for me?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

So by way of a bit of an update.

First off many thanks are due to ake for the help and steer on what was required. See above for head unit and touch screen.

I bought a Fiesta head unit and touch screen off a corresponding Fiesta off eBay. Both of them came from Gala motors a salvage yard it seems but with great customer service. Both items came well packaged and in quick time.

The extra bracket on the fiesta head unit had to be removed to fit in the transit dash. I found the easiest and less invasive method was to partially drill out the 4 pressings holding it to the main cage. The bracket can then be jemmy’d off quite easily.

All the wiring sockets from the old DAB stereo fitted the new fiesta head unit except 1. The old DAB head unit had two square plugs. One grey, one black. Each of these was for the usb socket. After some testing using the iPhone, it seems the black one is for the usb located above the binnacle and the grey one for the one below the hazard switch.

Fitted the touch screen with ease which just fits right in to the existing holes and bracket.

The radio works perfectly.
The steering wheel controls work perfectly,
The stereo connects to the phone perfectly and uploads contacts etc, handles calls via hands free etc.
The stereo also plays music from any source on my iPhone, (I only have iTunes and Spotify) It displays track information such as band and track name and playing time etc. It doesn’t display the album image data.

All good so far. However........

1. The old DAB stereo used to give audible beeps for the parking sensor as well as a handy display showing which corners etc were closer to an object for instance. The new set up only provides an audible beep. No display.
2. The new set up won’t connect recognise CarPlay via my iPhone (Xs). As the new head unit only has one of the square connectors points (the black one) meaning that you can only use one USB port. The one above the binnacle. When attempting to connect to carplay it states the Apple device must be connected to sync3 via usb cable. It doesn’t recognise any connection to iPhone when it’s plugged in to the over binnacle usb point. So having read on some posts that occasionally the over binnacle usb doesn’t deliver the full amount of amps I filed down carefully the grey square socket so that it would fit into the black socket on the head unit. (A dreamer would have been ideal here, but I used a small metal flat file). After looking at the circuit board inside the head unit the grey and black sockets seem to be interchangeable and have no discernible difference apart from the socket shape? Anyway, the stereo still doesn’t recognise the iPhone and hence CarPlay even through the grey socket (below hazard switch usb)

Again, I have to thank ake for the heads up on the fiesta usb socket. This one seems to have two corresponding ports on the rear that match the black socket on the head unit. It also seems to have an 8 pin plug which I am told is for power. This can be drawn from the 12v socket next to it.

I have ordered the usb socket and a double ended black usb plug lead to patch the USB port through to the head unit.

I’ll let you know if the fiesta socket works (I have no reason to disbelieve ake, his advice sir has been spot on.

I am wondering if the parking sensor display is a Forscan thing that can be rectified. I am hoping to retrofit a rear parking camera at some point, and having read those threads it seems some settings need to be reset/assigned via Forscan for it to work so maybe we are in the same realms.

Anyway, hope the above helps anyone else

So. To put a lid on this so to speak.

I ordered the Fiesta USB port (referred to as a hub) on eBay etc. I also knew I'd need a Cable that was double ended the same with the square-ish plug that fits the stereo head unit. I also found a socket that fits the power socket in the back of the fiesta usb hub.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164888790973 This I snipped the end off that I didn't need.

So I connected the power socket (4 pins in a row with a spring clip at one end) to the power supply of the 12v socket next to the usb location above the clock binnacle with connectors. then simply plugged in the double ended socket lead into the head unit and the usb (media) hub.

As soon as I connected the iPhone via the apple charging cable it recognised the phone and the fact it was apple. It immediately went into the applycarplay setup and worked straight off the bat.

So, parts you'll need.
fiesta head unit.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254665585106
fiesta sync 3 touch screen.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264545872327
fiesta usb media hub.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124694071070
patch cable to link hub to head unit.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402795538201
power cable to supply media hub from 12v socket.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164888790973

No doubt that if you spend hours scouring eBay/vehicle dismantlers etc you'll find the parts cheaper but I'm self employed and my time is better spent working on my own clients work. What I would say is that I tried several ford specialists and Main dealer who were just flat out not interested in setting this up for me. The one dealer I did find wanted over £1500 !!!!

So:- It definitively CAN be done!
Thanks go to ake who figured all this out before me and was invaluable.

Another thing I would say is that I have been member of most forum groups for cars I have owned and this one is by far the most useful with the greatest depth of information and support. Well done everyone, love it.

Some say that if Ake can't figure it out, then it can't be done, but never admit to using Scotchlok connectors in his presence, you will be hunted down

That said, this forum thrives on the sharing of information, and when posters come back having expanded on that information, it adds yet more to the pot, which benefits the next person trying to do that job, so thank you for posting back with your updates. 8) :D

I am wanting to do similar but with a genuine transit Sync 3 radio. Can you advise as to what fascia you used?

Hi,
Wanting to do this to mine. Looking at sync 3 units but how do you know if the it's a unit that runs without the apim? Also is there any benefit of getting a unit with the apim? Are there any additional functions?

Has anyone got part numbers for the required items?

The links to eBay have expired and while I can probably guess the correct parts through trial and error, would prefer to order the correct items.

Thanks
