2018 custom suspension

Postby Earlzy » Sun Jan 05, 2020 8:29 pm

I’ve just bought a 2018 custom (130ps) having upgraded from a 2014 LWB connect and the rear suspension is so harsh. Is there anything that can be done to soften the ride, I understand it’s to take weight etc but I only carry light tools probably weighing a total of 120kg (max). Sometimes if you go over a speed bump it sounds like a car crash in the back. Thanks in advance.

The Connects ride like a car, a Custom will never get anywhere near it.

Literally the cheapest fix is to throw 300kg of sand bags in the back over the rear axles. They are terrible unladen I’m afraid....all leaf sprung vehicles are the same.

That’s the key, if you don’t need to carry much weight, don’t buy a 280,300,330 etc. The ride is shocking if they’re not carrying something approaching a decent load. Load capacity is definitely something where bigger isn’t better. But even an empty 260 will be poor compared to a Connect.

Loaded the van up tonight with all the kit i need to carry out stone restoration, and cleaning samples.
Must have around 350kg and a full tank of diesel makes a hell of a difference to the ride.

I think my custom is the 270?! Could tell the difference in ride today when I loaded up 400kg of materials for my job. I loved my connect, as someone mentioned it was like driving a car. Guess I’ll get used to it. ( I hope).

Conrad Anderson do air suspension for rwd transits witch replace the rear springs with links and air bags maybe a way round it if not to pricey

I looked at this recently.
The cheaper kits ( ~£500 to ~£1k) are helper air springs, that replace the bump stops and still keep the springs. Won't help for making it more compliant.

The kits that replace the rear springs look good, but also look spendy. I'm getting quotes between £2k and £4k5 :?

May be cheaper to get someone like Midland Springs to make you up a lighter set of springs
