68 plate locking wheel stud issue

Postby Rorycars » Fri Feb 28, 2020 5:20 pm

I have just booked the van in. No to happy had today off so decided to get new tyres on the front. I had just purchased 4x extra alloy studs so I could have no locking stud.

The brand new (alloy) locking key stripped straight away, the locking nuts l believe are far to tight . I was only using a power bar and trying to crack them. As the title states 68 wheels never been off and the locking key never used.

Just glad I've never had a flat on the motor way etc.

Booked in as I'm blaming them for them all being to tight. Locking studs should be slacker the the normal studs in my book.

Anyone else had issues

On my 65 plate custom, I had to get them off and buy a new set. The Ford tyre lever should never be used and even a breaker bar can put too much lateral load on the socket, i suggest a spider arrangement with even pressure but I agree they are poor design especially as the torque is like 200 and probably 300+to get them off once they have been sat :(

Same here... I had to destroy mine to get them off. They are made of chocolate and Ford would not cover them.

I took an hour to get all 4 off, I bought aftermarket after that.... I know of 2 other custom owners who had the same issue.... I think it’s pretty common.

I could have gone to town on them but. I've complained good enough that they will remove and replace them. Will use normal nuts or get aftermarket ones me thinks.

Had the same problem on my old sportvan with locking nut not moving a few years from new , even ATS couldn't get it off. In the end had the purchase 2 additional locking nut adapters and using a cordless impact wrench and WD40 etc just kept going with in on and off for 30 minutes and finally it came off. Went for steel weels and covers this time on the new van as too many issues with alloys such as the above and curbing. I would recommend everyone carries a cordless impact wrench rather than relying on hand wrenches etc.

All the wheel nuts should be done up to the same (correct) torque, if 4 nuts where good enough, that’s what they’d fit. One of the first things that I do when I get a new vehicle is to loosen the wheel nuts and re-tighten to the correct torque. Then I know that I can get them off when needed.

FYI I’ve never seen alloy locking nuts on a Transit?

Thats a good tip Mike.
Never had this on any car or van before, so I never even thought there would be an issue with a new van.

I just had the same problem on my 68 Sport. Took about a month for a replacement socket to come from Germany at over £30. Replaced all the locking ones with good quality McGard ones.

I’m guessing that Ford have changed the locking wheelnuts that they fit? Mine had the same style from 2007-2016, they were steel.

Ford removed the locking studs and fitted a new set (free of charge I've only had it 8 months). Took the van home and replaced with standard nuts. Job done
