What about having a look at the heater blower resistor from a Mk4 Transit :?:

It's a heavy wire wound resistor that was mounted externally, near to the headlight, on Mk4 and early Mk5 transits, and could have similar resistances, that you could use

Are you sure that is for radiator cooling fan? Not for cabin blower? Anyway i made new resistor by using basic steel wire and it worked perfectly :D Lets see how long it will work.

Just for info, my DIY resistor made with basic steel wire has been worked fine allmost a year now and still going.

My own homemade still works, so no need to find real one spare part. Few rounds steel wire wrapped around the original resistor.

I've got this exact same problem, thought it was meant to do it :D

I've taken resistor out and there's a break in the wrapped wire so going to redo it tomorrow as have all the bits at work and hopefully will fix the issue

All fixed

I scraped off all the green cement stuff, snipped old wires off.

Re wrapped with same diameter enamel coated wire.

Works perfect

Ice cold Aircon because low speed fan working again.

Never realised I even had the problem so win win

Great! Hope it works long time too. I assume yours enamel coated wire is copperwire with thin insulation on it? Does it slows down the fans RPM?

I'm guessing this is the offending part, the green resistor? Where did you get the wire from, I suspect mine is broken as well, my fan is constantly cycling on and off, regardless of temperature.

The fan cycling on and off is probably due to the aircon. You can test that resistor with a small multi meter switched to resistance :)

Yes good point, might try that over the weekend…

Yeah it's a type of coated wire, used at my work on transformer windings.

With Aircon on now the low speed fan is constantly on, lovely lovely ice cold air con!

I was watching the pressure on forscan and sits between 800 - 1000 kpa now which is spot on

Cheers for the original idea and fault finding, never knew I had the problem

The symptom of it having failed is the fan not working at all, then suddenly (with air con on) fan goes high speed and compressor turns off then back on again. Process keeps repeating.

If resistor works, when air con is on the low speed fan will always be running until you turn air con off again

I've just ended up here, after putting in my symptoms & great work gents, this sounds exactly like my fault too.

Does anyone know what the resistance should be? I've yet to measure mine. Hopefully I'll get into it tomorrow.

Maybe @Kardaani? What resistance wire did you install?

Tbh it's more constructive to do a continuity test with a multi meter.

The wrapped wire had broken up on mine so it was not buzzing out at all obviously.

The closest wire I found was about .5mm I think, maybe .6mm I've forgotten already

I got a very low resistance after I had re wrapped so I don't think there's an actual 'it should be X ohm' figure
