HELP! AM I BEING RIPPED OFF!?

Postby need4speed » Mon Sep 14, 2020 4:32 pm

So took the ‘16 plate custom in for power steering pipes as 1 started leaking pretty badly.

Independent ordered new hoses and said they’d get back to me. Just off the phone now. They say that I now need a new rack as 1 of the ends snapped inside rack and they can’t get it out. He said that they’ve tried so much now to get it out, that even if it came out now they doubt the new hose would seal.

Anyone heard of this before?

I would guess that in answer to your question.....’has anyone heard of this before’

That the answer is no.

Seeing as I’m writing... it sounds like they have damaged the rack in attempting the repair..... I would ask them for a discount as the rack wasn’t damaged prior to them attempting the repair?

we've had many that have seized into the rack and always managed to get them out eventually

My red custom had a little leak from the rack but the pipe is small and just an o ring connection, not tapered just push in. I actually found that it was probably the reason for the leak. It seemed to need a slightly larger o ring.

The initial poster may be long gone by now but i have also come across this exact issue on my 64 plate.

It started as a 'small' manageable leak from the low pressure pipe from the rack but once it got to about 500ml every other day I realised I had to do something about it.

After a failed attempt with JD weld I ordered a new pipe.

upon removal of the pipe the very tip snapped of just behind the 2 seals. it was at this point my bum went 50p 20p a few times! Luckily I was doing as this at work on a sat morning. down side it needs to be off the ramp by monday so a new rack was out of the question

In blind panic i started to dig at the remaining piece with a pick with little effect. after routing through my tool box i found a very large wood screw ( possibly from the usual scumbags). screwed it in until it was well in there and proceed to wiggle and pull and voilà out she came. twitchy bum time over. cleaned up were some berk gouged a grove with a pick and hasn't leaked since.

Fyi if either of the pipes have a white crust around where the pipes attach to the mounting clamp DO NOT TOUCH THEM or even breath on then or they will just snap.
