2017 Transit Custom Tow Bar Electrics

Postby rossp123 » Wed Feb 24, 2021 7:25 pm

Hello - I'm new here. Searched through old posts but couldn't find an answer.

I've just fitted a tow bar. Electrics kit is on it's way - the sort that connects to wiring under passenger seat.

While I was under the van I spotted a 12 pin socket beside the spare wheel. Looks like tow bar electrics that OEM Ford part '2039806 - Trailer Coupling Wiring' plugs directly into it. (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Ford ... 3381826875)

This would be a cheaper and easier option than the passenger seat wiring - is it a simple plug and play option or will I have to go to Ford to get the van software updated to use that socket?

Have been googling for ages but can't find any info. Thanks! Ross

Hi Ross, did you manage to find out if the pin plugs under the van match up to the shorter lead as I’m looking to get this version stead of the long one
TIA

Hi Miles. I tested the plug with a multimeter and confirmed that it’s not ‘live’ by default. Local dealer quoted around £50 to get it programmed in, but that was based on a workshop time estimate, and I didn’t fancy being at the whim of some lads in a workshop after having done everything else myself - so I went with the other option. It’s really straightforward apart from the removal and reinstalling of the plastic trim around the passenger seat, which is a ballache.
Good luck!

With the Trailer Prep wiring kit you have two looms to fit and another loom to run to the battery.
1st loom is at the rear.
2nd Loom goes behind the passenger step
13Pin kits need a loom run to the battery for permanent 12v

Then activated on the computer.
