Alloy Wheel Advice

Postby chrisabraham1973 » Sat Mar 13, 2021 3:30 pm

Hi all, a bit new to this forum but am in the process of buying a double cab transit custom limited edition in chrome blue

Do you have any suggestion on good suppliers for wheels please and what size I should upgrade to? I previously had a similar van a few years back and I think it came with 235/50/zr18 which looked much better than the standard wheels in my opinon

Any help appreciated

thanks

Hi , wheelbase is a good supplier of alloy wheels and tyres, personally I like the 20 inch as I have had the Bola b21 on my last two customs, but you will lose a bit of the ride quality compared to the 18 inch but I am willing to sacrifice that as in my opinion the 20 inch looks better and fills the arches. On my previous van I had 255/35/20 which I found okay until you hit a nasty pothole, on my new one I am running 245/40/20 and find these better. Total cost including tyres was £1150 bargain

The facelift Custom Sport (which I own) 18" alloys look real good imho. I had genuine MSport OZ 20" alloys with Pirelli P Zeros which I've just sold as they became impractical on our roads and had to be so careful. There's a new set of 18" genuine MSport OZs on ebay for 1295, good price. I have my van lowered by 40mm so the 18s with higher profiles fill the arches same as the 20s did. Bob

Does anyone know if 245/45/20" fit on a Sport Van , more choice of load rated , branded tyres.

Anyone know what size the MSRT tyres are when the 20" wheel option is chosen ?

My Sport will take up o 20 months to factory order :( , I got a good deal on it though :)

20 months?? Where the devil is that order being sent to, the North Pole??

It took 5 months for me and I'm over the other side of the world...

So I have 245 45 20’s on my limited but I would have severe doubts that they would clear on a sport... I believe the front bumper and wheel arch have a slightly differing detail.

I moved from 245 40’s as they were being destroyed in potholes continually... the 45’s offer a small improvement in that regard but as you say the choice is vast in this size. Also they are much cheaper in the 245.... I got them at around 80 a corner where the 240 was over 120 a corner.

It will need checking on a sport though, at the closest the tyre is 7mm from the plastic mud guard and interestingly the near side is closer than the offside! Strange one.

In the end I bought some 16’s with huge 70 profiles to run in the winter months to save killing the 20’s.

Thanks for that info, I've just had a pm from a member who's just fitted 45 profile and they rub a bit but he has trimmed some plastic and bent the mudguard clips a little bit to stop them rubbing. Some pics would be great explain how, could be a hassle though.

I'm going to try and find out what size the MSRT runs and settle it

Yes, this is why I mentioned this.... he and I changed to this size almost at the same time.... we kept in contact on here.... I had no rubbing on any amount of lock or weight carrying but he did and made alterations..... the thing I couldn’t remember was his derivative? Pretty sure he runs a sport so this size may not work for you.

I would offer “trying mine on for size’ as that is really the only way you’ll know for sure but I’ve just sold the van unexpectedly!

“Will they fit” and other websites offer a calculator which will help to a point taking into consideration offsets widths and tyres but even that isn’t definitive. Every alloy has an unknown quantity.... tyre fitters refer to it as “back space’..... configurations can tell you things will fit but when you are right on the limit for the size there is only 1 way to know for sure unfortunately!

Ps I learned this the hard way lol.

I have a 20 inch alloy wheels on my mk7 Sport with a Blacklion BU66 Championt 245 45 20 tyre which is a 103 XL rated tyre but if they did not fit, I was going to get a 245 40 20 RoadX which is a 99 XL rated tyre, but I wanted as much of a profile as possible to help with ride comfort.

The Blacklion fitted but I had to trim the front Sport mudguards by about 15ml with a sharp bread knife I bent the metal brackets back about 15ml at an angle to get full clearance with no rubbing at all, if the mudguards weren't there, everything would have been OK.

I took the Sport for a drive for a few miles the day they were fitted on local roads, no dual carriageways or motorways, our local roads aren't the best, I also drove over four sets of speedbumps, and after riding around on them since March the 9th there is hardly any difference in ride comfort at all.

If you compare both tyre sizes there is not much more rubber on a 235 50 18 compared to a 245 45 20. I will try to add a tyre comparison picture.

I was pleasantly surprised the Sport handled really well, as I have read a few owners saying, don't do it and you may regret it and I appreciate they were only trying to be helpful.

I really rate the Blacklion BU66 ChampionT as I bought a set of 235 45 19 for my Wife's Kuga and its a very comfortable ride and the tyres don't cost a lot of money to be fair and OK, they are not in the same bracket as the top tyre brands but they are not in their price bracket either.

I would put Blacklion BU66 Championt tyres on any vehicle.

I am over the moon with the 20, how they look and ride, some will say a 20 is too big but I don't carry any weight and 20's fill up the wheel arches.

But everyone has their own opinion.

The new 20's are rated 1300kgs a corner, and I think the 18's were rated around 1100kgs a corner.
