I have a 20 inch alloy wheels on my mk7 Sport with a Blacklion BU66 Championt 245 45 20 tyre which is a 103 XL rated tyre but if they did not fit, I was going to get a 245 40 20 RoadX which is a 99 XL rated tyre, but I wanted as much of a profile as possible to help with ride comfort.
The Blacklion fitted but I had to trim the front Sport mudguards by about 15ml with a sharp bread knife I bent the metal brackets back about 15ml at an angle to get full clearance with no rubbing at all, if the mudguards weren't there, everything would have been OK.
I took the Sport for a drive for a few miles the day they were fitted on local roads, no dual carriageways or motorways, our local roads aren't the best, I also drove over four sets of speedbumps, and after riding around on them since March the 9th there is hardly any difference in ride comfort at all.
If you compare both tyre sizes there is not much more rubber on a 235 50 18 compared to a 245 45 20. I will try to add a tyre comparison picture.
I was pleasantly surprised the Sport handled really well, as I have read a few owners saying, don't do it and you may regret it and I appreciate they were only trying to be helpful.
I really rate the Blacklion BU66 ChampionT as I bought a set of 235 45 19 for my Wife's Kuga and its a very comfortable ride and the tyres don't cost a lot of money to be fair and OK, they are not in the same bracket as the top tyre brands but they are not in their price bracket either.
I would put Blacklion BU66 Championt tyres on any vehicle.
I am over the moon with the 20, how they look and ride, some will say a 20 is too big but I don't carry any weight and 20's fill up the wheel arches.
But everyone has their own opinion.
The new 20's are rated 1300kgs a corner, and I think the 18's were rated around 1100kgs a corner.
