Sync 3 bewilderment

Hi all, i have a new transit custom which i think is a 2.0l eco blue diesel stop /start.

I'm not a technophobe and normally very good with these things but i find the whole sync 3 thing bewildering.

Note that i do not have a van data account so am using the data account on my iphone.

As an example ,waze

im told that if i turn off airplay and plug my phone in via usb i can use waze. But when i launch it, it auto locks to protect my safety.

I have auto lock switched off in the app on my phone.

tried running the apps update on sync 3 screen but it eventually timed out saying try again later.

My initial feeling that this system is poorly implemented
