Dual battery's

Postby Tezenforcer40 » Sat Aug 21, 2021 8:05 pm

Hi Guy's n Gals, I have a new to me 64 plate custom eco tech, is it supposed to have two batteries?
These are pictures of the battery box there seems to be some gadgetry on the fire wall at the back of the box.
I have read some where that they have two batteries the work together on start up but the separate afterwards.
I'm ok with most things but not too confident with electrics, I just want to find out if I have the necessary hardware so I can get an auto electrician to make the connections as there seems to be alot going on in there lol.
Regards Tez

What kind of connections? There must be a connector on road side of driver seat to access battery power directly.

You have 1 (ONE) battery. Not all transits have 2 batteries. I have 2014 Custom Bus and I do have 2 batteries which I just changed after 7 years of service. When they are two, one is dedicated as starter battery, other one is for auxillary. My aux battery was 0% (leaking acid) but it was still starting fine as starter battery was ok.

BTW, if you wait until your aux battery dies and keep driving (because you can with 2 batteries), probably you will put too much stress on alternator. I am checking/replacing my alternator now as it doesn't work after driving with totally dead aux battery for more than a year.

Hi Guys, If I wanted to install a second battery does anyone know the physical dimensions that are allowed/required in the space next to the first battery under the drivers seat?

Regards,
Stephen

I have based my conclusion on measuring the available space under the driver seat and the existing AGM 80Ah battery dimensions. I believe (to answer my own question) the available size available for an additional battery is 315 x 175 x 190 mm

I fitted twin batteries to my old 2.2 custom, basically just plonked the same size batt next to the existing one and ran two appropriate link wires from batt to batt, didn't bother with the battery monitor sensors although the plugs are there but I think you'd need to change the settings in the bam or something maybe too so I just did the above and ran fine for 3 years while I had it!

Just to confirm things - the second battery is a 100Ah AGM 315 x 175 x 190 mm and it simply drops in place next to the existing 80Ah battery. There is a plastic strip that is used to secure a single battery so just pull that out and drop the second battery straight in.

Hello! Hope you don't mind me resurrecting the thread - how did the cover fit back on after you've put the battery in? Or, did you have to do any further modifications or is it simply a bent plastic cover with a tight fit?

Thank you!

Hi, the plastic cover that goes back over the top of the batteries prior to the metal retaining bracket is just a think plastic cover, however it does have a couple of small slots underneath at the front that clip/slide/push/hit with a brick over a couple of tabs on the battery holder box.

If you get the angle correct when putting the cover back on then it simply pushes forward and sits nice, get it wrong and it will not seat properly. I found the best thing to do was to feel for the tabs first so you know where they are and then line the tabs up so they glide in.

I agree it can be fiddly, but knowing that should help you get it back in place.

Hope this helps.

Amazing. Thank you. I was planning on taking the seat off to do it as I can't be bothered fiddling in the dark. Should help. :)
