Hi, We deal with transits day in day out. It’s what we specialise in. I would personally check to see if it has the padding which covers the injectors in place firstly, then check the steering column rubber insert which is in the footwell. You can press it down while driving to see if the noise reduces. Then lastly I wo up of clear the injector learned values. Hope this helps.

Hi thanks for your reply.
All you say has been checked/done and is ok. I find it strange how it sometimes goes really quiet for a period of time and then back to being noisy again shortly after...
is there any pressure regulator sensors that would give these symptoms. There seems to be a sensor on the end of the fuel rail and one on the end of the fuel pump. Any ideas.

Thanks

Although this wouldn’t explain your intermittent noise I have found that adding a fuel additive that had lubricants and a cetane enhancer did quieten my van noticeably.

I have the same problem. I have no clue that injectors can make noise. This rule it is not applying on gasoline, right?

What I thought, maybe it is possible that flywheel to be on its way to go down??

Hi perhaps not injectors causing this noise at all? Surely more likely to be the hydraulic lifters perhaps?

Hello,

I have the exact same issue as you, I am now on my 3rd engine. I can not find a resolution to this problem, literally EVERYTHING is brand in my engine bay now. I am pretty much done with this van now, I was wondering if you have fixed your issue by some miracle and could help me. I have been scouring forums for the last 2-3 years and your post is the first I have seen which is identical to my issue.

Many thanks

Hi just to let you know I have exactly the same problem with my 2015 custom believe me I am at my wit's end with it, I have changed the injectors map sensor, maf sensor , fuel rail with sensor, pump solinoid, air charge sensor, new inlet manifold, all genuine ford parts I have even had the dpf and egr delete taken out of the ECU and removed the dpf filter and blanked the egr valve , I've had it on a live data run with absolutely no faults but still have this diesel knock witch comes and goes, when I had the dpf system on the van it went into a regen smoked like mad but drove like a dream a quiet as a church mouse hence why I had a dpf deleat done on it but it still has this knocking noise that won't bugger off its had a full ford ECU update believe me I have put every sensor that the van has on it and still no cure, it can't be mechanical as it would be a noise that is constantly there not one that comes and goes I'm thinking this could be a ECU fault as I have pretty much changed everything thing else on it including the turbo but everyone I speak to including the transit specialists say they have never had a faulty ECU I'm at a loss with mine and have given up throwing time and money at it , hope you have more luck than I have and would be interesting to see if you ever find a cure for this gremlin!

Ok, so I know this is an old thread but this might help anyone reading this who has the same problem.
When I bought my 2014 2.2 Transit custom it did clatter a bit at about 1500 RPM. It also became intermittent and sometimes it was really bad. I took it back to Capels garage and they told me they all do that etc, blah blah!

A Little time after this I noted that the temperature gauge was fluctuating on the dash, sometimes dropping all the way down. Also I noted that the engine started to take 5 or 6 miles to warm up.

On one occasion the van went into limp mode on the M4 at about 70mph (glow plug light flashing). I think this was the engine being at full working temperature but the sender unit was reading cold. The engine was very noisy at this point. I pulled into the services and switched off, back on and the fault was gone, drove at 60 and it was ok.

Last week I actually got around to replacing the thermostat housing complete with thermostat and temperature sender. The engine now warms up very quickly (maybe 1mile) and the temperature gauge is a steady reading at all times.

What I have really noted is that the engine is without doubt running smoother, and the 1500rpm clatter issue has vanished. I suspect this is because the ECU was getting faulty information from the temperature sender and was compensating fuel/air and this was causing the clatter. The thermostat was also jammed open causing the long warm up time.

As you van is taking time to warm up, I would certainly consider a replacement thermostat housing c/w thermostat and temperature sender unit.

I've got the same on my van. I changed the cam chain which seemed to make it better for a while.
Once it was very noisey - yes the rubber grommet thing had popped out. Rebending the tabs and pushing it back down sorted that.
But still I have this intermittent knock.
I'll change the housing and update this.

I have a same 1500RPM knock when cold..

I had the battery disconnected for a few hours for another problem and on reconnecting it, the engine is much quieter!! No Idea why!! It will be good if it stays this way....

Changed the housing. Seems quieter but may be coincidence. Also siliconed the grommet through the floor. That made more difference.

Sometimes when it happens you can back off the throttle and reapply and the sound does not return. Strange.

Possible fix to this issue:
- check if the injector code is stored correctly in ecu
- using Forscan/IDS reset all ECU adaptations
- perform the injector learn procedure (engine must be warm); this procedure will take about 15-20mins and the engine will rev several times up to 4000rpm

Also, please note that those engines are noisy. You don't need to worry that much. A faulty injector will throw an error code and my suggestion is, if this happens to buy new one. Those injectors are not fully repairable.
