Hi,
I have a Ford Transit Custom 2016 2.2 Diesel which has an intermittent fault that seems impossible to diagnose. Please help!!
The fault begins by completely randomly cutting my speedo when driving with a number of warning lights (ABS, engine light etc.) however the van can continue to drive and the radio/other dials remain working. However, once I safely stop the vehicle it will not restart with two warnings coming up 'parking aid malfunction, service required' and 'immobiliser malfunction, service required'. The dash also has pretty much every warning light on and the odometer also has horizontal lines rather than numbers.
This fault has now happened six times since I bought the van in 2016 and seems to happen completely randomly. On the first occurrence I called out Ford Assist and very fortunately the engineer who came out said he had recently had the same fault and believed it to be a tiny amount of moisture in one of the connectors...blowing pressured air into one of the connectors rectified the fault on that occasion however I cannot remember exactly which connector it was and have failed to replicate this fix on more recent occurrences.
After this first time, other garages/engineers haven't been able to find the error before the van seems to magically clear the fault and fix itself. Sometimes this has been a number of days and sometimes a number of weeks. The van would then run for months as normal before a further occurrence of the fault. One thing I have noticed is that it seems to fix itself when it has been a particularly hot day with sun on the front of the van which may follow the moisture thought, but this could be a complete coincidence and the fault doesn't only occur after rain. Usually during the fault period there is no sign of life however this week the fault first happened on Friday, then on Sunday we tried to check connectors for moisture and it re-started once but then failed again straight after. I have then managed to start the van tonight with no fault but after a few minutes of driving the speedo has once again cut out and the van will not start again.
Extremely grateful for any ideas on potential causes or similar experiences as it is driving me mad that the vehicle is completely unreliable. Thanks for any help in advance.
