Nextbase Dashcam Hardwire - Dashcam or van issue?

Postby mholland90 » Wed Sep 22, 2021 12:26 pm

Hey folks,

Got a Nextbase 522GW dashcam with the Nextbase hardwire kit installed in my van.

Every time the stop/start starts the van, the dashcam cuts out (does not even shutdown gracefully with the shutdown jingle), literally just cuts out and then reboots.

I'm assuming its detecting a lower voltage because the van is restarting, but am unsure if the fuse tap is in a fuse thats always live or one that switches off when the van restarts. (I'm also assuming that the dashcam internal battery should keep it going in those few seconds, but apparently not)

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like wired to wrong fuse?

And the internal batteries in the Cam don't seem to be very willing either, mine manages a few seconds before giving up the ghost.

I realise this negates your hard-wiring of the dash cam, but have you considered using the cigarette lighter plug that comes with it, and plug it into the socket in the dash above the steering wheel? You can still run the cables behind the roof trim, and under the rubber seals down the door.

I have done this for a 622GW and works a treat.

But yes the batteries in those things are rubbish. You'd think in this day and age, with phones doing the same that a dash cam could and more, the battery in a dash cam would last far longer than they do.

Do they actually have an internal battery?
Some of these units only have a capacitor which is designed to keep the unit running for just a few seconds after power down.

Nextbase are a law unto themselves. The cams themselves are great, but everything surrounding them is utter sh*te. Bluetooth connection, app, battery ‘life’ = all rubbish. Even their customer service is great. The sticky thing fixing my cam to the windscreen failed after a few weeks, I phoned them at 4pm that day to complain, a replacement popped through my letterbox at 9am the next morning.

My bargain basement 322 runs from the fag lighter socket and works a treat.
