Cam Belt Issues

Postby Cov_lad » Thu Oct 28, 2021 6:03 pm

Hi All

One of our lads reported having Brake issues on my Transit Custom 68 reg a couple of days ago, it’s gone into Ford main dealer and they have stated that the timing belt is disintegrating in get engine and rubber has entered the brake boost pump, they have said it needs stripping new timing belt and could possibly be issues with the oil pump and turbo.

Quick facts

Ford dealer saying £4K plus
Van done 50,000 miles and it’s 3 years and 3 weeks old l.
The van runs it was driven into the garage.
The van is 3 weeks out of warranty as we are waiting for our new lease van to be delivered.
It’s been serviced at an independent garage which I have the invoices for used OEM parts.
Spoken to Ford customer service who are talking about contribution and possible warranty cover as it’s under a month.

Surely this is a pure and simple manufacturer problem even though it’s just out of warranty.

Questions

Anyone else had this issue ?
What’s the chances of Ford covering ?
What shall I do if they don’t cover on warranty Id be thinking legal route but the fact it’s not main dealer service history will that snooker me ?

Thanks in advance for replies.

Failed timing belts causing catastrophic engine failure are a known issue, caused by the oil being diluted during failed DPF regens as diesel is dumped into the sump. Simply put, it’s caused by following Ford’s own loony-tunes recommended service intervals and not changing the oil regularly enough. Ford issued an urgent recall for 2.0 Euro 6 vehicles to have their timing belts inspected, and replaced if necessary FOC, even on vehicles well out of warranty. If yours is leased, the recall letter will have gone to the leasing company I’m guessing.

As far as I know, Ford seem to be replacing engines FOC, although I don’t know whether a lack of main dealer servicing will be an issue. Talk to your leasing company and talk to Ford again now that you’re armed with this knowledge.

Useful tip to OP = you only get useful help & advice if you bother coming back to read replies. You revisited 2 hours after your post, and then evaporated. Thanks for wasting my time. And if by any chance you revisited without logging in - you're an entitled, ignorant turd who doesn't understand the concept of 'thanks'. Look it up in the dictionary - you'll find it under 'manners'.

I had the same problem where my brake pedal completely locked and luckily at the time I was only doing around 25mph so I bought it to a stop using the handbrake. Ford know this is an issue and are doing recalls in batches so the dealer network can cope with the numbers. They have no issue with someone being seriously injured or worse judging by their lack of customer service & compassion towards this major manufacturing defect. The recommended replacement schedule for these cambelts is 10 years or 150,000 miles so it is obviously a manufacturing fault. My van had been serviced by Ford and at a specialist garage but always using genuine parts so not to invalidate any warranty and Ford contributed £417 towards a £1650 bill. They missed the point that someone could be killed soon and that they have a cambelt fitted that is not fit for purpose! Good luck with Ford and if you go down the legal route keep my details and I will be with you! Good luck!

My local engine tuning guy told me last week that he'd recently been chatting with a dealer who'd told him due to 'wet cam belt' issues they have 17 Customs all waiting for new engines on the 68 plate.

A thread on the same topic here >>> viewtopic.php?f=65&t=204372
