Lost 5th gear

Postby Amlocks » Tue Sep 27, 2022 5:37 pm

Manual 2019 340 PS170 done 101200 miles

Currently driveable but no connection between engine and wheels when in 5th. Pulls well uphill and engine brakes as normal in 1st to 6th

Was doing 60mph and thought clutch was slipping but maybe it was popping out of gear.

Few occasions last few days it felt/sounded like i was crossing a textured line or corrugated bit of tarmac, but couldn't see anything and was only a split second each time. Didn't notice rev needle jump but might of missed it.

Any suggestions please?

I checked linkage on top of gearbox by looking and waggling but haven't stripped out dashboard to check under gear shift yet

Thanks

it's on the outside i think ..in a separate compartment from the rest of the box ..if it's an mtx75 box ..but the reason it fails is low oil level ..this compartment is higher up than the rest of the gears..so 5th is first to fail.
i hear that the reverse light switch can fall apart and let the gearbox dump its oil ..leading up to this.
if not that ..then drive shaft seals will leak with age and mileage or damaged after clutch change

Don't think its fixable ..not cost effective - sum of the parts is too high.

If its a front wheel drive vmt box, 5th gear is a press fit on the input shaft and shears off. Ive done few of these and its a gearbox out and strip job. Replace shaft as the gear is part of it and cant be replaced in its own and replace the top and bottom bearings as these need replaced with new shaft. Start to finish its about a 5hr job.
