Transit custom engine upgrade

Postby gtsupport » Mon Oct 31, 2022 10:13 pm

Hi all, looking to get myself a transit custom, 2018 - 2021. I can't be driving around in a diesel van, so I want to put a decent petrol engine it. (cossie owner for 26 years, can't leave things alone!)

My questions to you all, is this a reasonably straightforward job for a garage to do, and are there any go-to places out there that specialise in this?

Top of the wish-list would be to put a coyote 5.0L unit in there, but have had zero luck trying to find anyone that's done that. Failing that I would imagine one of the faster focus engines would be a good 2nd choice.

Speaking to a few local workshops I've been told that getting the electronics to tie up is likely to be the biggest issue, so if anybody knows a place that has experience of this I'd love to have a chat and see what can be done.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to do this myself, I want to find a reputable tuner or workshop that can handle the job.

Thanks for any info.

Matt.

I dont know of anyone who has put a different engine into a transit custom except Guy Martin and that was a massive job! If you do find someone to do it make sure you put a build thread on here- I’d love to see a RWD V8 Custom…

Struggling to find anything at all on this. I've been told that in a VW transporter you can swap the engine to a VR6, or similar sporty petrol engine from the golf line-up. Didn't want to have to buy a VW and look like all the rest though. Perfect van would be a 2021 custom with full Carlex kit and interior, only with a heap more power.

The search goes on...

there is a uk VW transporter with a B7 RS4 twin turbo engine in it

https://youtu.be/Qvhu4Vaki9c

but yes please do let us know if you succeed. my 2022 MSRT is a lot faster than my 2018 remapped sport so maybe just get a new engine and tinker with it ?

plus the mpg is better too

Ecoboost 3.5 would be a sweet upgrade. If automatic, the 6F-55 transmission should bolt right up.

They don't get the Custom at all but big Transit is equipped either 3.5/3.7L NA or 3.5L turbo.

There was someone on the facebook COG group fitting a BMW 6 cyl engine (335i?) to a Custom - was posting his build story, but has gone quiet for a few months

Try jam motor sport in Northampton . They have done a transit with a Rs focus lump in it . Last time I heard of it , it was running 450bhp .
It’s on you tube somewhere .
