Outer cv joint replacment

Postby Anthony1997 » Sun Feb 05, 2023 9:01 pm

Hi everyone hoping for some advise. I have a 2014 fwd custom and been advised by a garage that my o/s outer cv joint is knackered but the whole driveshaft has to be replaced. They said that they are pressed on but another garage has said that there is a clip on the driveshaft that snaps and need to be replaced when doing them? Instead of getting multiple different answers was hoping you guys could help. Thanks

easier to just replace the driveshaft. Changed both mine last year. Not very difficult. A little bit more expensive perhaps but at less than £100 per shaft......

The outer cv is not listed separately from Ford,
You can get it,but it comes with shaft fitted already, and you swap the inner joint onto it,if it’s ok.

Or,as said replace entire shaft.

Thanks for reply everyone, I rang ford's and they said as it is a automatic the driveshaft is 500 pound! Is there anything different I have to do when replacing as it is a auto compared to manual? Done a few manual driveshafts before on my own vans but never a auto

Also abit of guidance would be great, as I'm replacing driveshaft I'm assuming the trans fluid will leak out, I've seen a few posts saying you need special tools to refill system but I don't have anything like that, or is it a simple case of draining the fluid and refilling ? Thanks

Postby Anthony1997 » Wed Feb 08, 2023 8:27 pm

Hi everyone i have a 2018 fwd automatic transit never done a driveshaft on a a a auto just my manuals and by no means a mechanic so sorry if this a dumb question haha. Is there anything different I have to do when removing/refitting a driveshaft on a auto and im assuming that the automatic gearbox fluid will drain out after removing driveshaft so what is the procedure for draining and refilling on the auto box. Was going to jump at it but then got worried seeing a post saying you need specialist equipment and different amount of fluid and such. Any advise will be great

When I done mine I had to buy the whole shaft as outer isn't available, was quite easy to do but mine was an aftermarket shaft as Ford shafts were crazy money, I have a knock when turning but I do alot of miles
