Power steering issue

Postby cyclingspongecake » Tue Jul 18, 2023 11:39 pm

My 2017 transit custom has some kind of issue power steering wise. I noticed earlier that when turning the wheel when stationary or at slow speeds it is very juddery with unusual noise and this evening there is an unusual sort of rattly noise coming from the engine bay.

Any thoughts ? I haven't had time to jack it up and have a closer look/listen yet.

thanks

First thing to check is the crank pulley ..they have a rubber damper built in that deteriorates with age and mileage.

If this is a 2.0 panther,
It’s Likely the clutch built into alternator pulley has locked up solid.

looks like aux belt tensioner is knackered, its wobbling around all over the place when the engine is running :-( although it doesn't look too complicated I can't see a way of getting one of the bolts in the cover out which is right at the back of the engine and also I gather you need some kind of tool to tension the the second belt.

Again,
Another symptom of the alternator pulley
Which can be replaced without removing anything, other than headlamp for access….

So.. finally got it back.

New alternator - yes clutch had locked up but was busy grinding its way into the outer housing of the alternator and all the bearings were a bit shafted so wasn't worth replacing the clutch/pulley itself :-( Not an unusual event for these alternators apparently...

The pulley below the alternator also knackered - big chunk out of the rubber surround thing.

Belts and tensioner were ok amazingly.

cyclingspongecake ... mind if I ask how much it cost ... sounds like the exact same symptoms I have just taken mine in for, my dealer says they can't look at it until 17th Nov!! so sat here worrying about costs (and not having my van for that long).

Hey mate, we have the same issue and are needing to replace the alternator. We have a 2018 2.0 Panther diesel 170bhp automatic. We're currently in Canada with it (it's our motorhome and we shipped it over for a roadtrip). Our mechanic over here hasn't seen this European transit engine before and wondered if anyone could provide some steps to removing it, i.e. remove the headlamp or cooling pipes etc.
