Cooling Fan constantly cuts out.

2015 Transit Custom 310L 2.2 TDCi 16V DPF Minibus 125 cv

Hi All - I have a weird one with the engine fan. As soon as it gets to temperature you hear the fan trying to kick in but it cuts out straight away. It will try again every 30 seconds but never is able to kick in leading to overheating engine.

The thermostat is working as normal - also if I test the van via diagnostic tool, it works just fine.

No engine codes

Any thoughts? I couldn't find a fan switch on these? I can watch the temp of the coolant slowly going up as expected on the diagnostic tool so would that rule out that the coolant temp senso is faulty? Or would that be a good place to start for swapping out pieces?

Thanks so much for any thoughts

Try swapping the fan relay for another one ..sometimes there is one in the same box that controls the AC fan or other accessory.

Thanks Mark - there are 4 of the same relays in the box - I've tried rotating them all - no difference in results unfortunately

first off I'm confused in your last thread, you said you had a 2.0 ecoblue .....

now its a 2.2?

so answer based on 2.2

There is a sensor in the thermostat housing

some engines have one in the cylinder head also ..if yours has i don't know ?

after wading through this parts list..i cant find the cylinder head one, so don't know if it has it or not

here

https://www.catcar.info/ford/?lang=en&l ... MTItIn0%3D

some fans have a resistor pack attached close to the fan motor ..that allows the fans to run at two
speeds.. its not unknown for these to pack up.

and the rest is down to you using a diagnostic scanner to see if that tells you anything

Thanks Mark - fair point - I actually have a fleet of 15 Ford Transits raging from 2015 to 2025 models!

The one in question is indeed a 2.2 panther engine. As far as I could find there was no sensor in the cylinder head nor could I find a control module or anything on the fan housing itself. No codes at all on the diagnostic tool.

I've ordered a new coolant sensor so will swap that out as first port of call

Thanks for your replies, very much appreciated.

I believe you have same issue. Burned fan low speed resistor.
