Persistant Problems

Postby Dannny » Wed Mar 26, 2025 9:17 pm

Hi all, could I ask for some potential guidance with my Custom 2014 2.2 please 155k

I've bought it off my mate a few years ago who had it from new and took good care of it. It's always had no guts going up hills, there'll often be an old 04 plate transit tanking it past me, while my foot is on the floor and I'm just getting slower.

Quite soon after getting it , it developed a diesel leak, here's what I've had done since I got it,

2 X new rocker covers , with copper washers and injector gaskets replaced each time
New turbo
New oil pump
New vapouriser
New alternator
New starter motor

I'm still getting a diesel leak , the o rings on the return pipe have been changed, and there is no visible leak from them when the engines revved. It's pooling in the honeycomb plastic around the edge of the rocker cover

The other day I was driving on the motorway at about 60 and got an engine check message (no yellow engine symbol) and the abs hill start assist message. It went into limp and the next morning it was gone. A few days later it came back, this time with the yellow engine light.

My mate scanned it and I got these codes

P0113 IAT sensor 1 high volt
P00BD MAF too high
P0299 turbo underboost
U0422
U0401
U0253

He reset the codes, they haven't come back but I've sprayed the MAF and intercooler sensor with MAF cleaner

Has anyone had a persistent problem with these injectors leaking? My mate said it might be blowby and the engines naffed

If anyone give any advice I'd be very grateful thanks

You've not mentioned EGR

this can contribute to underboost if stuck open. but would think it would have a fault code for that. although ive heard that EGR faults can bring on MAF faults

if EGR ok, think you need to do a compression test

and check dpfs not blocked

Thanks Mark, yeh I assume the egr is the original one , my mate gave me all the receipts of work and there wasn't anything indicating that was changed.

I saw that Launch did a turbo/egr/dpf cleaner additive. I've heard great things about them from the O'Reilly YouTube channel and people gave rave reviews about it. That might get me by until I have the chance to get someone to check /replace the egr. That said if I just get it blanked and the ECU recoded would that solve it?

I put one of those dpf foaming aerosol cleaners in bit where I believe the sensor pipe goes , the van was good up hills after that , but the EML still came on, I think I need to try and get it taken out and check the vapouriser maybe, then clean it with some of that Wynn's off car cleaner. That said, I'm terrible at mechanics , so maybe I should take it in, I just don't want to be victim to alot of potentially unnecessary sensors etc

at 155, 000 ..think the DPF has to come off ...you then block it up at one end, stand it up and fill it with chemicals ..leave overnight and flush with hose - then you know its been done .

Depending where you are in the country, it might be worth getting in touch with Jimmy at O'reillys, getting a price off him and let him sort it.
I know we all like to tinker and try to fix stuff on the cheap, but sometimes, it's "cheaper" letting an expert sort it properly, rather than keep throwing parts at it hoping to score a win.

Thanks for your replies guys having issues here but I borrowed a friend's obd

Had a 8-9millibar differential on the dpf so while not great, it's not totally clogged

I had a look at some older posts on here and in one Mark you mentioned to look at the intercooler hose, I saw a drip of oil on mine, took it off and low and behold a hole!

I've ordered a replacement, but had a 300miles drive ahead of me, so got some self-amalganting tape and 2 jubilees and it's working perfectly! I think the problem was caused by a perished lower engine gearbox box mount

Here's some pics in case it helps anyone else . Really easy to fix, I'm a total car novice so literally used a 7mm socket in a stubby ratchet screwdriver and to get the pipe off the top , I removed the socket because the radiator fan was in the way and used an adjustable to loosen it, the whole thing took 20mins to remove, clean , patch up and refit.

When I get the new pipe I'll keep a jubilee there to protect it from the alternator bolt , and I'll change the lower engine mount too

Honestly it's like a new van, so thanks for your help!

Now to tackle the diesel leak!

Well they usually make a whistling wooshing noise when there is a hole in them ..you never said that, so went off on a tangent on diagnosing other stuff.

Glad you got it sorted :)

Seems to be common fault on the 2.2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiMS0vkN-hY&t=333s

Booster hose rubs on bolt head

and before plugging diagnostic equipment in ..people should learn to listen to the van, as its usually accompanied by a wooshing noise on hard acceleration.

Yeh good advice Mark, appreciate it mate

It'll be unrelated to the diesel leak won't it?

Sorry , as even you don't know where the leak is coming from, so i cant really guess on this.

i don't own a 2.2 or a custom ...so you're waiting on others, who do , to come up with suggestions.

what i would do is, clean the engine up ...then it may be possible to see the source .
