Ongoing DPF / Adblue issues.

Postby DeeNuttyDJ » Wed May 14, 2025 4:59 pm

Hello, i'm here because i've hit a dead end with my 2017 Transit custom.

Bascially we brought it locally. from a private seller loved the van and how it drove etc.

Pretty much sold when we got it.

Few weeks passed by and we started running into issues.

We had a lovely presence of blue/grey smoke that would appear at times. which we thought it's doing driving regens. didn't think anything of it.

Till we ran into the lovely notification and a lovely engine light

So i own a topdon pro, got it plugged in and found that we have a lovely open soot level of 152% and closed loop soot level of 21%

because the van was demanding a standing regen process i went ahead and ran it using my tool

managed to get the levels down slightly however during the process (40 mins odd) i only seen a little bit of smoke from the exhaust which makes me think it's personally still blocked a ton.

Heres a image before we ran this process with the codes which my topdon found via health scan

if anyone can shed any personal experiances with this id much apprechate it.

Also since its mentioned in the subject, We think the adblue system is not functioning or helping with the situation, We replaced the adblue injector recently (just because it was the cheapest option) bare in mind we had zero codes for this. and nothing to say it wouldent work. the tank is also full of adblue (and has not decreased in miles and miles of usage )
personally we think it may have been mapped out or disabled in some kind of way by a previous owner but they said its functioning. clearly not?

i've tried communicating with the adblue using my topdon, and tried to run reset processes but they always failed as none of the sensor reportings come back to fit in the margins of testing.

i know this is a long read. but if anyone could help id love some input. before we decide what to do next with the van.

kind regards andrew

Hi, in regards to them two fault codes:

Cat efficiency - you ideally want to carry out a dosing test on the ad blue injector and confirm it is injecting 45ml during the test. Below or above +/-5ml indicates an issue.
Prior to that you can get the vehicle upto temperature. Engine coolant temperature needs to be above 70 degrees and exhaust temp sensors around 125 if I remember correctly. confirm the adblue pressure to the injector is okay. This rules out an issue with the ad blue pump. Should be around 500kpa. You can check that with a scan tool.

Incorrect conditions for regeneration - usually this will happen if something has interrupted the regeneration process when driving. It's more than likely the engine has been turned off during the regeneration.

Closed loop soot reading is the one you want to watch and as it's below 100% It would appear your dpf has a low soot level. This closed loop is based off your dpf pressure sensor. You can also confirm that it's reading with live data and make sure to check the voltage reading of the sensor on live data
