Crankshaft pulley

Postby longhair » Sat Sep 06, 2025 5:50 pm

I seem to have a loose shim behind the crankshaft pulley on my 2014 custom that is rattling about. I am going to remove the pulley to see what is going on, but wondered if anyone else had come across this. I just wanted to know if it's something that's come away from the pulley or something else. I just can't see the reason why it is there.

common for them to break up after many miles or years.. as they are made out of rubber and metal.

Looks like I'll be removing it to investigate it more. The funny thing is the rubber part of it seems in good condition.

Well I managed to get it off. It's a thin piece of plastic that appears to have broken away from the back of the pulley, apart from that it seems in not bad a condition. Think I might change it anyway for peace of mind. Not sure whether to get a genuine one or take a chance with a after market one.

Had a look at loads yesterday on ebay , to see what you meant .. whilst looking, i could not see any difference between a £40 brand new one and a £280 brand new one .. that was the range of pricing.

Looks like I'll will be doing the cam chain and tensioner whilst I am at it, as it is still making a noise that I wasn't sure it was the belts or pulleys, but it's still there, so that's another job to do.
