Temperamental Starting - Clutch Switch?

Postby Hyppy » Mon Dec 15, 2025 3:08 pm

I've got a '16 Transit Custom 290 that's started to give me grief. After a string of phantom 'service now' messages and intermittent engine management lights coupled with it seemingly randomly either starting or not I've had the ECU rebuilt. This seems to have sorted the warning lights but it's still a pig to start, usually giving just a single click for a good few key turns until it'll start and run quite happily.

I've a feeling that it's some ill-defined magical combination of pedal press and key turn that gets it started, and sometimes it'll give the 'press clutch and brake to start' message which I'm lead to believe could be an indication that the clutch switch is playing up. I bought what I think is the correct replacement (no. 6G9T11A152AA) as it seems worth a punt for a few quid, but I cannot for the life of me see anything that looks like it around the clutch pedal to switch out with the new one. Can anyone give a pointer as to where the switch actually is? There are two yellow gaiters at the top of the pedal. Is it one of those? I can't see any photos or exploded diagrams online.

Ta.

sorry don't know what a 290 is .. well its a 2016, so presume its a 2 litre ecoblue , am i right?

all i know is the engines .. either 2.2 or ecoblue i know nothing about the numbers 290

so from now on ask questions with either ecoblue or 2.2 as there were some that still had 2.2 in 2016

, it's not really relevant to any engine/drive train questions,
290 merely denotes the GVW of the van: 290 = 2900kg, 260 = 2600kg etc.

Clutch switch is located on the very top of the pedal, as is the brake switch on the brake pedal. It may be or maybe not relevant to your Custom, but my Focus has another switch built into the clutch master cylinder.
If the clutch switch is playing up, it should tell you to press the brake pedal, and then start normally. It may be worth changing the electrical part of the ignition switch as these can cause problems too

Ta. I'll have another look 'up there'. If it doesn't start with a few presses and turns of the clutch it does give the brake message, but even then an instant start isn't guaranteed. It all seems a bit hit and miss.
