MK6 Transit In Silver MWB or SWB Flat Top Wanted

Postby Mutley » Tue Dec 30, 2008 9:14 pm

I am looking for a Transit in Silver. The spec is flat top with a SWB or MWB the thing is I will need to fit a tow bar so it needs to be a 100ps or higher.
The Caravan it will tow is 870kg so from the VIN plate, the Transit Train Weight less the Transit Vehicle Weight must = more than 870kg.

You won't get a mk6 flat top MWB you only get SWB flat top, but you can get a mk7 MWB flat top

Thank you very much for info much appreciated, but will I ever get SWB that I can use for towing ?, I have spent 3Mths and no joy. I thought going to a MWB it would be heavier so it would be ok, I fear a Mk7 would cost to much my budget is only £5k max. I am also unable to go Medium Height as it would not go in my Garage.

at 870kg i'd have thought any transit would pull that fine - an ex rac would be ok as it'd have the towing diff but they are only 90ps :D

One thing to watch with a RWD is it may not fit into your garage

Any 260 or 280 will be able to tow that, I've towed caravans of simillar weight behind my SWB med roof FWD 280 75ps. If you want to make it slightly easier for yourself go for a higher power engine or a remap

Thanks for advise but I am getting very confused, I agree any Transit would be ok to Tow my Caravan but the
Department For Transport state " Example you have a car with a maximum weight of 2180 kg and a train weight of 3980 kg the maximum towing capacity will be 3980 kg minus 2180 kg which gives a towing capacity of 1800kg"

To me then a great transit I have seen SWB flat top 300 model, weight 2880kg and train weight of 3500kg, so 3500kg minus 2800kg = 700kg and I need 870kg again no good, or as I say am I missing something. I know this Transit would Tow my Caravan no problem but the Law would say something different if I got stopped.

I see many Transits at Steam Rally's which I display at and they are towing Caravans, are they all breaking the Law ? as I say what calculation have I missed so as to get away with it. ?

Assuming you have the licence you can carry whatever load or tow whatever trailer you want so long as you don't exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight or the Gross Train Weight (or the axle weights)

A 280 SWB has a GVW of 2640 and GTW of 3500 so even with a fully loaded van you can still tow 860kg (so long as you don't go over on the axles)

I got a swb 52 plate executive 125 tdci in med steel blue (very nearly silver) its done 97k and its got full history up till last year when i got it, i have serviced the van myself sisnce then.

All the bells and whistles lectric windows heated screen etc and a really gutsty 125psi engine . its in good nick body wise with a couple of little dings (very minor) here and there, cleans up really well its been used as my only vehicle so ive looked after it. Its never been a builders van!

Id sell for £3500.
