TRANSIT RECOVERY

Postby Cookie @ C.T.S » Tue Feb 05, 2008 6:47 pm

Back in the market again, Just sold my old petrol beavertail recovery truck to upgrade, anyone know anyone selling a non-rotted out one, gotta be a fussy pain in the arse buyer this time as i want a decent one to last me a good 2/3 years

anyone anywhere got and leads/mates or own one for sale let me know
may consider a cheap spec lift for 6 months while I sweat, work hard and save

cheers :D

Yes mate, I only bought the other one with the intention of keeping it 6 months or so, just to get me out of trouble after the last one was pinched :( and it did fair play to it, it worked bloody hard
Wanted to get rid of it before the mot and tax run out and had to start spending money that was better off being used towards a newer one.

I'm craving something newer now with power steering and a smiley face

I also run a 'S' reg ex Amec or transo or something Lwb transit, and it's an absoulute pleasure to drive, So I'm using that with a dolly for the time in between finding a new wagon, not ideal but keeps me mobile :D but the difference between the S reg one and the old E reg girl is so immense I stopped wanting to use the old one

LOL @ 'interesting times' The one I had pinched was like that, every time you took a long sweeping corner on the motorway you took your life in you hands

Went to look at a Fiat recovery of all things earlier, facorty built extremly low bed, will fit a lwb transit  good superwinch winch, lights etc, it had a twin back axle wich seems a bit wong after years of transits  but it looked nice and the price compared to the bay stuff was very favourible, and taxed and tested for a good few months.

2 things I'm not sure about though, is the fact it's a Fiat  as I have no experience of them whatso ever and my pile of transit spares won't be any good when things go wrong and the fact that due to it having a Renault (I think) engine change the power steering is no longer plumbed in

I'm in a dilemma I got to be honest, going back tomorrow morning for a good poke around and a test drive and go from there I think.

Theres a couple around here with twin axles on them, an old Talbot (Express?)with a fairly big ali bed, old but looks good, the rear wheels only look about 12 inch so its low, and a home built mk3 trannie, two single rear axles, looks like it was a short wheelbase thats had an extension thrown at it at some point and its all steel, must go over 2.5 ton empty

 :? I bet that looks a bit, erm, different, makes you wonder how the hell some of these homade ones stay together as soon as you put a load on

Not knocking the homemade jobs, out of the 3 transits i have had 2 of them where home/random garage made and where bloody brilliant jobs
I have been to see some though that the beds creak and feel like they are bending when you walk on them, fook strapping a car down tight on some of them, the straps would pull the beds up

Well i went and done it, I bought that fiat one, still can't make my mind up on the bed though, think its cos it's so different from the norm,it's a real proper coackworks built job, was done for a suburua and vw dealership originally, I would post a pic up when i take one but don't want to get shot since we are on the transit board
Can't be facing any charges of treason
Will use this one for another 6 months i think while i save a bit more so I can finally get a nice up in the years transit, then I can die a happy man, buried in my tranny beavertail with the beacons going

  Thats the way mate, nothing like a good days work shifting scrap for the nice payout at the end, getting your ticket and straight down to see what the accepted weight was 8) love it.

Wish I had a few knocks on the door like that mind  like every day of the year would be nice

Here's a question for you, I have never used a pulley block for my winch, never needed one, always had decent winches with good pull, but been thinking of giving one a go, seen them on ebay but they are £30 plus post, so am trying to find someone who has used one to see if they are worthwile, you had any experience of them? :?:

Thanks for the reply's guys

It's the same here as I got asking people face to face, half said don't bother and half swore by them

LOL, gues i'll give one a go and see, don't really need one as the superwinch i'm running is more than man enought to pull up a transit with 3/4 of a 306 chopped up in the back  Just though anything that makes the winch's life easier could only be a bonus and always like to try different things out.

Think i'll give one a go and go from there. :D

but then again he uses a brother strap on scrappers
Never needed one yet, a mates got one on his all the time, 12,000lb winch mounted on a transit and he blocks everything, but then again he uses a brother strap on scrappers

 Half the fun of dragging on scrap is seeing what wierd on wonderful ways you can deform it with the push of the winch button

I had a google, still cant see the use in them though, unless your pulling close to your winches capacity for a prolonged period.

I can see the use for them on dead pulls but for a bloke using a 12,000lb winch on a Transit it all appears pretty pointless as he wouldn't be able to load anything thats approaching the limits of the winch (and would most probably be dragging the truck backwards as opposed to the load forwards?).

After reading up on the subject I did manage to dispell his theory that a snatch block doubles the winches capacity though :D , it appears that using one indeed nearly halves the current being drawn allowing the motor to stay cool but doesn't actually increase capacity, allowing the winch to pull at heavier loads for longer, you learn something every day.
