1995 Ford Torneo

Postby frank_sumner » Sat Nov 26, 2005 11:23 am

Hi All,

I've returned to the fold, or at least I will have done when I pick up my new (used) beast. I've just won on Ebay (Item 4591790372) which is a 1995 Ford Transit Torneo Petrol 2.0 with 75000 on the clock. I'm rather hoping this will be as good a buy as it appears on the surface but I'll probably only find out when I get it in for MOT!

One question though. When looking on the net for insurance. I can never find a 'Torneo'. Does anyone know what model I call this. My old red girl worked out as a 120 POP/STD/L (1989 Diesel) and the Co-op Insurance Services were quite happy to insure her as a van as she only had 8 passenger seats.

Any help appreciated

Frank

ps. I know it looks like Valsheda's van, but I have no intention of cloning it. We just missed our old Transit so much we have had to get another (how sad can a family get!)

I insured the Mk2 bus with the 3 ltr V6 with Norwich Union for £200 for the year, so I would give them a go!

Got it and a smooth journey from London. The van is not bad on the outside, rust bubbles on the arches but not much else (that I can see anyway). Inside, the seat covers are in poor state but the carpet is fine and the rest just needs a little bit of elbow grease to get it up to scratch.

Does anyone know of a source for replacement covers for the seats (not those naf waterproof things sold on Ebay. The chair backs seem reasonable and can be cleaned, but the seat covers are either stained, frayed or torn.

Provided that the MOT doesn't throw up any real problems methinks I got a good deal.

Well done with the sale mate, if I were you I would go for replacing the seats, and here is an idea. I am getting the front seats and engine from a late minibus (not sure what year but they have integral seat belts and the engine/carb was dependant on an ECU). The other seats were still available and I know the friend of the seller so got the seats for only £100. I didn't really need them but they seemed like an opportunity not to be missed. Let me know if you want me to find out if the rest of the seats are still up for grabs, and you could get them all at once.

Fred,

Would be interested (cost notwithstanding, of course!). The current seating arrangement is a single and double at the front then two 3 seaters centre and rear. I have no mechanical skills so would require them to fit into the same holes in the floor though.

Let me know if your seller is interested and how much.

I could be wrong, but I recon the body shell is the same for the Torneo and the regular minibus, so the seats should bolt directly to the floor. Our SWB (Mk2 though) has driver's and double passenger seat, then a triple, then a single next to the side door, double opposite, single and double behind at the back. I will send you my number by PM.

Next Question. Any idea what sort of fuel consumption I should get? I'm a sad person and record fuel consumption. With the bike it has often given an early hint of problems (ie vacuum fuel tap splitting).

She passed. A few comments about wheel arch corrosion and a slight leak from a front damper, but passed all the same.

They did note that the expansion tank was empty but filled it up for me (didn't spot that when I did my checks - oops).

My MOT garage is the same one who will take care of her. Used them on and off for about 15 years and they always do a good and honest job, so they will be doing a full service in a couple of weeks just to make sure we start off OK.

So get the tax tomorrow and we are back on the road again. :D

Hi, I insured my Tourneo through Egg online. It didn't recognise my number plate but I found the vehicle through the Make/Model selection. Mine is an 8 seater GLX, which was the only one listed. I don't know if they will make a fuss over the ninth seat. They didn't fuss about my LPG conversion anyway :-) They were pretty much the only people I could find who WOULD insure it. I tried Tesco in the past and they didn't want to know!! I was with Minibus Plus previously but they wanted £500 this year. Egg insured me for £260 :-))
Who did you insure with and how much did it cost??
You should get around mid 20s MPG, maybe a bit more on a run.
Good luck with it!

I'm with Cooperative Insurance Services (http://www.cis.co.uk). £155 fully comp (with 5 years NCB) + £50 (ish) for recovery insurance.
