recommended tyre pressure

Postby dandare » Sat Jul 29, 2006 12:37 am

hi i was wondering if there is a preferred/recommended tyre pressure when carrying the transits max load ? the manual recommends only one measurement 42/40 off the top of my head. but when the van is fully loaded it doesnt look too healthy.
any tips

sorry folks i was a bit vague with the details: transit 80 swb semi hi roof?
tyres are 195s on one axle and 185s on the other.
i delivered a full load of mags mustve been about 13/1500 kgs of paper but at the manuals psi it looked far too dodgy so i pumped it up to about 50/52 looked a bit better. id just like to know the optimum when fully loaded, as its 2000 mile drop off, it all went fine/safe the last time but i'd rather know for certain from someone with a bit more of clue than myself.

Why have you got two tyre sizes? Is this normal?

I reakon you may have a bit more weight in the van than what you thought...I deliver leaflets and company mags to a company in cambs and london.I use a 190 luton and i can get the mags about quarter of the way up the walls before having a full load on..
2 diffrent tyre sizes??185 are cheaper than 195 maybe..

yup :!: an 80 can take 800kg so your a fair bit overloaded

also the tyres being different isnt a problem untill you use your spare, then you will have an odd set, best thing to do is when you replace try to standardise them all :D

if you want to keep the van and be legal the only way will be to have a trailer

right so 800kg is my max carrying load,
that would explain why when i did the first run last month that the van still looked a bit dodge after unloading 1/4 of the load at the printers as the vans arse was nearly touching the ground i reckon there was about 1400 kg in the back! not too clever!! the total they wanted dropped off must have been about 2 ton!!
i was trying to make some sense of the load plate in the pass side footwell and could only see 2 weights 1300 kg and 1320 kg maybe this is the vans weight ? but good, now that i know, i can get it sorted with the printers for the correct amount to collect.
the diff tyre sizes ye it was a cheap deal on tyres if i remember rightly, i needed a couple for an mot, ye the spare is 195 so it causes a prob should i have a burst on the 185 but i'll evently get round to sorting the all out in the same size when the time comes.

You'll need to change your van for a 150 SWB then this will carry almost double what you can legally carry now :D
God help you if you have an accident and you are overloaded 'cause it's an instant  £10,000  fine for a commercial vehicle :( so be careful :!:

nah i dont plan risking it, ill only carry what the van can take. its up to the folk at the mag to have sorted it out=, ive been asking them to get all this sorted out.
but its the attitude of right we need 10000 mags delivered he's got a van, job done. no thought went into can the van carry that amount of weight. and at least now i can tell them "naw it cannae" so get it sorted out.
any other thoughts on tyre pressure when fully loaded is 50 the standard.

I'm sometimes up to my limit and with 195x14 wheels/Tyres it's 45 to 50psi on the front and 55 to 60psi on the back :!: :D

And what you must take into account is that the pressure is tooo high after your delivery so take it easy :!: especially in the wet  (it could let go as though you're on ice  )

I used to work for a multidrop parcel company (independant one) and the boss got a contract to deliver the travel brochures to all the major stores Thomas Cook Lunn Poly, Intertravel etc (before some of the name changes) and some independant stores also. It looked great as to begin with they (the holding company) only sent through small numbers but as we proved we could do the job we got more and more sent through. It got so bad that we ended up doing brochure runs only and had to split area in two as the wieght of the brochures was getting stupid, no single pack over 20kilos but when some stores were taking 10 bundles, you quickly ran out of weight handling. The Vans were long wheelbase Talbot Expresse's it got to the point were we had to take 7.5 ton trucks out to be able to do the delivery and those vehicles don't make for a particularly speedy delivery day. The boss eventually dumped the contract as we were nearly always at our wieght limits for the vans as was worried about the long term damage we were doing by being fully loaded almost permenantly...oh and the bundle numbers were getting so high that the overnight lorry was having to leave pallet loads behind as even these would have put the 16 tonner over the weight limit with all the regular parcel stuff he had to bring back to the base.
The reason that some of the bundles got bigger and bigger I discovered whilst in one particualr travel store who always had double the quantities of all the other stores ...their policy when a customer came into the store was to load them up with brochures rather than take time with the customer and actually do their job...this was Intertravel (called the Holiday Shop or something now I think)
But to kind of swing this back onto topic with that amount of weight it isn't good for any van long term, clutches etc and as above watch the tyre pressures after you have dropped the load as it is dicey.
