how long for heater to get warm

Postby kjb » Thu Dec 13, 2012 9:53 pm

Is my connect any different to any other I ask, during summer the temp gauge runs approx half way & the heater will burn your eye balls out, come winter the gauge struggles to move & even after 20 miles or so the heater is only luke warm,I was thinking of renewing the thermostat, but don't want to mess in sub zero temperatures if this is normal

As above not normal, should get warm after 2-3 mile.

I've found it all depends on how I drive it. If I'm constantly putting the turbo under load it wil warm up within 5-7miles. If I'm being a Sunday driver and light on the throttle mine can take around 15miles to warm up. I don't touch te heater until its sitting in the middle as if I hit traffic and have te heater on the gauge will drop pretty fast.

I suppose you don't have the aux heater installed? That's exactly what it did when I had mine broken.

I put a brand new genuine Ford stat in this week & its no better, sometime where I have to work is very high up, even if I start the engine 5 mins before I leave when Im driving the 4-5 miles back down to the main road it just stays on cold, I know the engine is no going to produce much heat when is not under load but they could have designed the cooling system a little better

Nope I haven't got the aux heater. I asked about the factory fitted one in another thread but it seemed a bit long winded to fit. I'm toying with the idea of covering the front of the radiator like they do on old land rovers and the lorries that drive in the arctic. Just got to figure out what to cover it with and how to fasten it.

Would strong magnets and a semi breathable fabric do the trick to cover up part of the rad? Mine takes a while to warm too but I did find that having it on the hottest setting seemed to get the warm then hot air coming through quicker.

That's an ingenious idea. Just wonder how te magnets would hold up with te constant bumps and jolts of driving though.

I have been looking at kenlowe preheaters but they seem a tad expensive really.

It would slow down the air flow through the rad but that could cause a problem when the engine is under load and needs cooling + it would not warm up any quicker
as there is no warm \ hot coolent in the rad when the thermostat is closed, all its doing is circulating around the engine and the heater
