Pollen Filter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????

Postby TrafficJam » Sun Dec 30, 2012 3:55 pm

After salvaging the contents of my footwell from the swimming pool that had formed there during another torrential down pour during the night, i decided it was high time to buy a Haynes Manual.

I have looked at past postings on this forum and have found that it seems to be a trait with the Connects and easily solved by renewing the Pollen Filter, so today I undertook this mission "or atleast locating the pollen filter housing" So, feeling very proud of myself for not cocking up a simple task I was bemused to find what one could only presume is where the Pollen Filter is meant to be! The top of the housing has a plastic lid which is grilled "like a Birds Eye Potato Waffle" I presume the filter sits under this waffle like lid there by preventing me from looking straight into the "thing" thats situated behind the fuse box behind the glove box in the cabin, but its not there. So I am wondering, was it left out during production because its lovely and clean in there or has some amateur chucked it in the bin and not bought a replacement, either way it hasnt got one.

Or could it be that I have a special connect and it doesnt need a Pollen Filter, if anyone can help much obliged

A lot of (early?) Connects had the place for the filter, but weren't fitted with one as standard. You need to remove the N/S windscreen scuttle to access the area :)

My connect is a 53 and does not have aircon but I recently replaced the pollen filter when I serviced it I used genuine parts as pattern ones fit where they touch

The picture in the haynes manual shows the pollen filter but no plastic waffle cover.
Is it an 'either/or' situation, with the waffle cover used to stop any big debis getting in?

I dont know if its an either or, but what I do know is that when it rains or I use me windscreen washers the footwell starts to fill with water. I have had the van now for three years and during this time up until about three months I have not had any problems. Suddenly we have this huge downpour and when I go to the van the footwell is full of water "i say full" probably about a pints worth. So mopped it up and nothing again until the next down pour, so I mop it up and check the drainage holes under the scutles and clean em out thinking this has solved the problem.

The saturday last, I notice again there is water in my footwell, so i bung it in the search engine on this forum and find it could be the pollen filter, hence my query. HOWEVER, after doing some maintenance on the van today and then taking it for a spin and liberally washing the windscreen, i again notice water in the footwell, so i think ffs lets investigate further. So i pull off the trim around the footwell and peel back the rubber flooring only to find the wiring loom submerged in water, so i pull it back further to find further saturation. Sod this I think and proceed to take the seat out so I can pull the rubber flooring right back. The saturation is only present in the footwell but the matting that travels up bulkhead between the engine and the cabin is also sodden. So I thinks this has been going on for longer than I have suspected, its just now we are in the winter months it doesnt dry so easily and has become so sodden that the water is now coming out over the top of the rubber floor.

So I am pondering, is it the none existant pollen filter causing the problem or could it be the rubber seal that travels around the windscreen that has come away in one place that is causing the problem (mastic gun and gaffa tape out tomorrow) or could it be something else, otherwise I don't understand how water is getting in?

Any ideas?

May be the pollen filter housing to bulk heads needs re-sealing as water getting under it and then running across

Sounds like the seal has gone where the scuttle panel presses against windscreen when its fitted. common problem on connects and mk1 focus. try seal it up with silicone and see if it helps
