OK im just thinking out loud here but how about this for a way round the manifold/ adapter plate problem

fit the standard manifolds the wrong way round ie left on right and right on left

that way they would be pointing forwards and you could route the exhaust down front of the engine and away

like i say im only thinking out loud i havent tried this on my van so they might not even fit but worth a try

my mate did that when he fitted a 302 V8 in his mk1 transit many years ago, mind you he was mad good at metal work, managed to mount it far enough back and mod the bulhead enough so it was behind the flat front and you could still get your feet on the pedals. lol

minor problem is that all would they fit if the threads were redrilled in the correct place

had a look at this today but i forgot my alt/pas bracket i'd got it at work to clean up but that is the only problem i can see, it does look like the o/s one would foul slightly, also the heat might be a problem so near the alt but the n/s is an easy fit i'd be about 90% confident i could get them both to fit this way, by altering the bracketry and relocating the pas pump and the alt only thing is im now thinking of fitting twin turbos to mine so this idea would be out of the window
