I agree motorwise. it was built to run on diesel so why chance wrecking a perfectly good engine :?:

this could well have done irrepairable damage to the injection pump the correct fuel also acts as a pump lubricant and the pumps are designed with this in mind - when you start introducing any old fuel to it, it protests by breaking in a costly fashion

by any old fuel I'm not just taliking about the rubbish thats been fed to this van I'm including veg oil and biodiesel - it's rubbish and causes the owners of late diesels, particularly high pressure diesels (CDI's HDI's TDCI's etc) thousands of pounds when they go wrong

the decision is yours :)

i agree with you but we know the answer, they think they are saving a few quid

red diesel is white diesel dyed red so you obviously wont have a problem using that - exept from the HM customs and excise of course

Fully taking on board what you say, I think the point of the question in the first place was to check out if what the guy said was possible i.e. if central heating oil has the same chemical composition as white diesel or if a small tweak could make it a viable fuel. There's no harm in asking!

This is Smooth Hound on Pictish Punks log in, I would hope that I could ask what I choose to on Transit talk, as long as it is about transits or the running of them and so forth, If you think you are to wise for all this wasted talk then go and talk to someone else, I started this thread because there was something i wanted to know. so if your not interested in this thread other than to make out how wise you are, or stupid I am then please go and have a look at another thread where your input might be welcome.

It's aimed at motorwise because, contrary to what he said - it's not 'my decision'. The question wasn't about saving money or using central heating oil myself- it was to see whether the guy in question ( whom my son listens to when it comes to vehicles) is a bullsh***er or not. I use diesel in my Transit so i'm not trying to save money or encourage anyone else to, i'm merely trying to find out if such a thing is possible so I know whether my son's being wound up or not.

What i'm angry about is that having asked a simple question, motorwise has made a wrong assumption for starters & you, Gemini, joined in with your comment about saving money - neither of which are anything to do with my original question. I'm grateful for your opinions that it's possible but a bad idea but don't appreciate your making assumptions about me or making sarcastic comments about using diesel, which I do anyway.

Maybe it wasn't directed at me personally- perhaps it was directed at the guy who claims to be doing it so apologies if i'm a bit over sensitive, but that's what it looked like with the last comment that 'it's your decision'.

i had a transit 1997 70ps come to me for breaking, it wouldnt start when cold, when we took out the tank it was full of what we thought was cherry or red diesel, well we tipped it in the forklift and then that wouldnt start and when it finally did it run like a pig (early perkins lump) so we drained it back out and replenished it with proper cherry(red diesel), then a day or two later i spoke to the fella the 97 Transit came from and he told us it had heating oil in the tank and he had been using it for a while, he said its only downside he had noticed was that it didnt like starting when cold :D obviously the DI engine likes it more than the old perky

you've got the wrong end of the stick there I'm not trying to dig anyone out or call anyone a cheapskate - what I said is based on thirty years of experience repairing these thing when they break - it was meant to be lighthearted as is everything I say (I think)

people are using all kinds of stuff to fuel their vans/cars but it's not all good - I could survive on a diet of totally burgers and coke for a while but eventually I'll end up ill in hospital

"it's your descision" is aimed at anyone considering alternative fuels other than the proper gear - "if you (be it whoever) want to take a flyer and bung it in it's up to you" thats what it meant

maybe I should have answered like this:-

"yes it will run on it but eventually it may/will break and cost a lot of money to get fixed"

all OK? :D

this applies to all fuel related topics, oil or otherwise.

veg oil from tescos, recycled veg oi from the chippy, bio diesel or heating oil will NOT harm you engine, if all the people who claimed to know that it is detrimental to your engine could please state from what experiences or knowledge you have gleaned this info from.

there is stacks of info on the web about alternative fuels. old mercs will run on lard if you heat it up so it can be pumped.

heating oil should be 28 second, whilel gas oil (red diesel) is 32 second this is the time a measured quantity takes to drain from a calibrated vessel. the down side of heating oil is it is slightly less viscous than pump diesel or red, so putting some form of lubricant in it helps. the plus side is heating oil is duty paid (at 5%) and as such is a similar colour to pump diesel

does nobody remember the havoc caused to the transport industry when we went over wholesale to ultra low sulphur diesel? old fashioned inline pumps suffered earlier faliures due to the lack of lubricating properties that where found in the sulphur of 'proper' diesel. this problem has been over come by the euro compliant engines with improved pump tolerances. but it proves a point that not all of the brain washing use pump fuel cos its best!

and finally, rudolph diesels first fuel was...... peanut oil!

carry out some research on the internet (good old google helps) have an open mind, experiment, be prepared to change fuel filters a little more regularly if using reclaimed oil, but dont be put off by all the scaremongering (sp?!)

and don't forget that it's illegal to use heating oil or red diesel in a road vehicle.
