Lining Carpet fixing, is wood or a painted surface better.

Postby paulrichardson » Sun May 05, 2013 11:25 am

Hi Guys,

I'm going to use carpet lining to finish off my bed base, which I have constructed with a carcase and ply covering.

I just wondered whether I should paint the plywood before I glue on the lining carpet?

I'm not sure which surface will be best for the glue to stick too.

Regards,

Paul

Fitted mine on to the wood, Think it depends more on quality of glue, Got some B&Q stiff and it wasnt very good compared to the glue I got with the carpet.

Good stuff, High temp and the seller is very quick at sending items out.

Just get some unibond PVA and dilute it slightly and then coat the bare wood with it. Once dry, just use your spray glue as normal and it'll stick just fine. (If not PVA, wallpaper paste will suffice as a sealing agent)
I used "screwfix" no nonsense spray glue and it's absolutely fine.
Some will tell you, you need to get glue that adheres to a certain temp, but i.m.h.o unless you are driving to the jungle in Belize, the screwfix stuff is fine.(I think)
Using spray glue direct may req. you to use more as some may sink into the timber.

That's the same kind of stuff I used on mine. I carpeted mixture of bare wood, laminated wood, painted surfaces and metal, and it bonded to everything perfectly. I replaced a damaged section recently, and I had to rip the old stuff off bare ply lining. It had been on nearly 3 years, and didn't come off without a fight!

The glue to use is heat resistant spray glue!!! I've used it on both conventions! Perfect!!!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your help.

I think I'll go with sizing the wood with wallpaper paste, then the High Temp Spray on Glue.

Regards,

Paul

If you dont use high temp glue you will regret it. Maybe not straight away, but it will come away. trust me i know from experience.

i used mine on bare ply and it worked just fine, just remember not to skimp on the glue, make sure you have got plenty on both surfaces and let the solvents evaporate first.
