90ps connect vs 90ps focus, what happened??

Postby Bailey. » Sun May 12, 2013 12:06 am

I drove a friends loan car at his garage shoot out to get some milk the other day and was shocked how much better it went than my 90ps tdci connect, wen I got back and mentioned it he said it was a tddi so not exactly like mine but it felt a lot quicker, not a little. So I'm thinking the only thing that can really have an effect is the box ratio, if so, where do I sign?? And would it be interchangeable with my 2008 90ps connect?

Get a focus box with the speedo sensor in the right place and change it over basically. It will be crap for pulling weight though.

Thanks;) so ref clutch and flywheel it will all be the same? Has anyone done it on here?
The max weight I pull is around 200kg so not an awful lot on that front!

As far as I know it's the same box so the same clutch and flywheel. If you're that worried see if you can use a website to check the part numbers from each vehicle and see if they match.

Focus final drive ratio 3.41
Connect final drive ratio 4.06

both are fitted with MTX75 g\box, you can see the difference here between the 4.06 & 3.41

I can't quite get my head around it ATM! The gears will be longer by quite a bit, so will my connect perform EXACTLY like the 90ps focus(longer gears as such) I just. Ant imagine the connect driving like the focus???

I guess you will loose torque but if you are not pulling then its no problem. Maybe with a remap/chip box whatever, you would replace that lost torque.

Mine is a very eco van if you keep it off the motorway so I'm hoping to swap out my box when the clutch goes for the focus box.

The connect sportvans Ratio is 3.80

connects 110ps from 2009 onwards the Ratio is: 3.80

So fitting a focus TDCI mk1 115ps gearbox (3.41)
or TDDI 90ps (3.41)

will be fine, just a slight reduction in torq but they will fit no problem.

Just remember to fit your original gear selector mech to the top of focus gearbox, otherwise you will fine the gears are upside down :!:

So a 3.41 ratio box, along with a van tuner remap should make a big performance increase and in someways just a nicer van to drive? And shouldn't make any difference on fuel economy?!

Mpg should have a noticeable increase I would have thought.

I still have to ask, why has nobody done this gearbox change? seems a little to good to be true in someways as these boxes are as little as £50 on eBay!

I haven't done it as I'm always carrying some weight and plan to fit a towbar for versatility so would need the shorter ratios. It just boils down to whether you use your van for work or social really.

I use mine for work but tools consist of a hand held box, multi meter and a battery drill. Plus a 8-10 boxes of spares weighing no more than 150kg, so really the max I will ever carry is 200kg. I dont think it will have any effect on me, looking into it even more I suppose you could compare weights of the focus and connect to get a better idea.
