Need a decent MK1 LWB for Top Gear

Postby TomBBC » Tue May 14, 2013 1:02 pm

New poster here - great forum!
I'm looking for a Mk 1 Transit LWB panel van to film for a Top Gear documentary special with James May this Thursday 16th at the Heritage Motor Museum near Gaydon, Warwickshire. We are featuring the Transit as one of our 'Cars of the People' due to its importance and commercial success and ideally James would like to drive it while telling its story.

There are no high speed stunts , pianos, crashes etc involved but ideally we'd like the Van to be taxed, Mot'd and insured as we'd like James to drive it on the public road.

If you are potentially interested please drop me a line or get in touch on 07950708469 - or if you have any advice on where i could get hold of one that would be much appreciated

thanks!

Have you contacted Peter Lee who runs the Transit Van Club :?: He lives near-ish to Gaydon, and has many contacts in the Transit world.

Or there is Fred Transit who supplies vehicles for filming.

You won't be able to PM them, being a new member, but I can do so for you if you want

Thanks for this, I appreciate it

We are in touch with both Fred and Peter but Peter's doesn't go on the road and Fred's has a slightly non standard single 'hatchback' rear door. Must admit we didn't realise how rare they are becoming now! I noticed that a few members seem to have a few so fingers crossed that someone might be able to help further

How much money is on the table please Tom?

Bearing in mind TG isn't noted for it's responsible attitude / behaviour, how much responsibility will the Beeb take for returning the vehicle in it's pre-hire condition please?

thanks mb4ever

do you potentially have one available?

It'll be James May driving the transit as part of a profile piece so no races, handbrake turns, stunts or fast driving so it will be very gentle. We are only allowed to drive once all aspects of insurance are settled correctly so yes we'll make sure the condition is the same whenthe vehicle is returned. Regarding money could you email me with your details so we can talk this through in private? I'm on tom.whitter@bbc.co.uk

thanks

Hello. Only me! I think you will find the tailgate door was/is an option, and is as it left Ford. I spoke to Mark earlier and he seemed fine with it..... He was more worried about the wood paneling in the back.

it looks like that! No idea how many were made, but to be honest the barn doors were more common. This (and mine) is a SWB by the way
