engine running signal

Postby andrew_fraser2001 » Thu Sep 15, 2005 10:12 am

Hi Folks,

I have taken a "GPS tracking system" out my old van and fitted it into my new transit.

I am looking for a 12 volt signal when the engine is running. Can anyone tell me where i can find that? . I have a new transit 350. TD . I would rather not take a feed from the alternator, ford say i will invalidate the warranty!

appreciate any ideas,

Thanks

Andy

Welcome Andy! Can't help you with newer vans, but I am sure somebody here will. The tracker sounds interesting, did you fit it yourself to your old van, or did it come with it?

engine running signal

Postby andrew_fraser2001 » Thu Sep 15, 2005 10:32 am

Hi ,

Thanks for your response,

Yea I fitted the tracker to my old van. and now have it in my transit, but i would like a signal or voltage that tells me when the engine is running. The reason is the tracking system i have can log engine running hours.

Cheers

Andy

Where did you get it from? Other people might be interested too.

Welcome andrew!! :D
MrMpuk (mike) has the wiring drawings on cd! he may be able to help you!!! (he will be along shortly  )

If you were to take it off the altenator will the signal be a constant 12v?

Can you not take it off the live feed from the key? would that be good enough?
:D

I cant remember the company i bought it from, but i think its called a "trackm8"and the system it is on is called "pinpointers" http://www.pinpointers.com, I can just log on view all sorts of info about my van, also cuts my insurance. it also has a "trembler" in it,
basicly if someone brakes into my van, my van will send me a text message...it does all sorts of things

had it about 3 years now. Handy tool especialy if like me your van is your
livleyhood

It just needs to be between 6v and 30v when the engine is running and 0 volts when the ign key is off. I dont want voltage on the first click of the ignition barrel or the second click , only when engine is running.
It's not that important but when i start to look for something is consumes me

Seemingly the alternator is a No No. Warranty and stuff!

on most ford wiring looms the solid yellow wire is radio etc behind the unit which is easy to get to thats on when the key is in position 1 & 2, I would go for that, but check warranty ?.

Link not working due to the comma at the end.

Try http://www.pinpointers.com/content/

Just a quick question Andrew before I start looking through the wiring diagram, why can't it be switched from the ignition, it seems quite odd to only have it on when the engine is on! How many wires does the unit have, and what do they all do?

Okay so I've just read the title, you want an engine run signal I guess so it knows when the engine is running. No probs I shall have a look.
