mk5 beavertail, electic speedo to cable?

Postby dc1984 » Thu Jun 13, 2013 8:12 pm

hi folks,

im not too good at explaining these things but i have a problem with my van, the speedo hasnt worked since i bought it so i took the clocks out and found the cable was connected, checked under the van and found the other end tucked up out of the way so asked a friend to have a look as i couldnt see where it would go to.
he thinks that the gearbox has been changed at some point with an electric gearbox fitting. i have a few pics....

electric???

More likely that your speedo has been changed, I thought all Mk5 transits came with electronic speeds?

Doesn't happen to have a rev counter in the dash as well by any chance?

No mate, no rev gauge in the dash. Think its mibby the cooks that need changed instead of the other end?

They changed around 97.

You can changed the speedo drive back to the cable type with out removing the gearbox. You remove the electric one, blank it off, then remove the blank on the other side and fit the cable drive.
Search the MK3/4/5 section for more details

Hey guys, I seem to be back to square one with my speedo.

It appears that there are 3 types of worm drive bits that go into the gearbox where the cable goes in but my local ford dealership couldn't tell me which one I would need  is there any way I can find out what one I require?

Or

Would it be better / cheaper to try and find a set of electric speedo clocks? Would I simply need electric clocksbor would I need a loom to go with it?

Thanks once again folks.

You will also need the small oil seal that goes in in front of the cable.
On the sixth day God created a Sprinter on the seventh he gave it away and bought a TRANSIT

speedo drives are the same between electric and cable. take the bung out and fit the cable, leave electric bit there

So can I just take the electric sensor bit out of the passenger side of the box and fit it into the manual cable bit on the drivers side mate?

Thanks for the help folks,

I found a transit in a scrap yard today with a speedo cable, I removed the 10mm bolt and bracket that holds the speedo cable into the box but couldn't get the worm drive bit out of the box, is there a way of removing this or should it just pull out?

Thanks again :)
