Chemical toilet

Postby Robert decorator » Sat Aug 24, 2013 12:18 pm

Going to fit a chemical toilet in van, I do a lot of climbing and wild camping, and I am in the process of doubling the van as a camper to use as a base. Now for the silly question do they smell a lot,? and does the chemical dissolve your site, couldn't remember the word for excrement :-)

There not bad at all, 2 things I have learnt about them is always pull the handle to open them first before lifting the lid as they can pressurise with altitude  and also make sure the lid on the blue solution is secure and stored safely if your carrying it in the van, trust me on that one, just follow the instructions for the 2 solutions and you should be fine.

we have used cassette toilets and those portapottis for years whilst racing, in the caravan. If the correct chemicals are used, and the things aren't filled to the brim, then no stinky bog smell. get a good make, (look at the reviews), decent brands are well worth the extra money and there are a few different sizes and shapes.
They smell a bit "chemically" but it's fine, certainly no worse than at home.

Lol you guys are silly. What do you think motor-homers do when they need to go?

I don't even bother to use chemicals in mine anymore, part from once in a while to keep things sweet. And a bit of olive oil/sunflower oil spray to lubricate the seals. Can't say I notice any smells unless i been eating alot of processed meats!

If you use chemicals then by law you can't empty it down a toilet, it has to go into a proper chemical disposal place like on a campsite.

If you don't use chemicals, then you can put it down the loo, open up a sewer and tip it in, dig a hole and bury it (at least 30ft from water). If you are worried about it not breaking down your McBricks, then 1st off stop eating McDonalds and 2nd, put in a few litres of water at bottom to help it swish around. The motion of driving does the rest. Also, instead of peeing in it, just use it to take a no.2 in and the smell will be considerably less. Peeing can be done into bushes, bottles, buckets... also bonus you don't have to empty it as often.

Dirty bloody camper vanners you might say, but at least unlike in spain and portugal, we don't get out the car in middle of night and take a dump on the tarmac then leave it there in the morning for the local street cleaner to put in their bins,

We had a burger van opposite where I worked, he was there 7:00am till 4:00pm, never left the van, and no obvious toilet. Looked a dirty bugger too. Always got a sandwich early in the day just in case, but it never smelt of anything other than cooking oil.
