Van will not move after parked for a couple of days

Postby bikehunter » Sun Feb 25, 2007 10:36 pm

I have a FWD 2ltr van and after a fews days parked it refuses to go forward. Continuing with some perseverance there is a bang of what can only be thought as brakes releasing and all is back to normal.
I wonder if anyone else has this problem?

That'll be one of your rear brakes jamming on then. You have to strip them and give them a clean. Either that or just park it in gear and don't use the handbrake.

We have that on the old pug 405, repair would cost more than it's worth so we just park in gear :P

they do sometimes jam on these if left unused - strip the drum off and have a look you may find the wheel cylinders have leaked on to the shoes - if so then you'll have to replace them

good luck

It's just started to happen to mine.
I didn't drive it over this last weekend and I washed it as well but when I reversed out of the drive this morning there was a resounding 'THUNK' from the rear which could only have been the or a brake releasing (I hope).
Not a good thing to happen on an 8 month old van with only 8k on the clock.

if the handbrake sticks after standing in cold damp weather, it's usually a sign of excessive brake dust build up inside the drum.

If the brake won't release, turn off the engine...stick it in gear and give the back plate a quick clack with a knocking stick.

thats usually enough to release it.

Sticking Brakes

Postby Dan T » Wed Feb 28, 2007 2:14 am

That happened to my works van mk6 2004 04 - 85 280 mwb. Because its on autolease the rac came and fixed it, he used a big hammer and wacked the drums twice, Sorted.

Although i've never had that problem with my 2002 02 mk6.

Wow, thats a lot of replies! Since that last time I wrote about it ,it hasn't happened!
Thought it might have been a clutch sticking as forgot to mention that it happened when I started the van without depressing the clutch pedal.

happens with my X reg mk6 and like mentioned on here, happened with my puggy 405 too.

i find if you put it in reverse and start moving a bit quicker than normally(well most people) it will clunk off and be fine.
