help with transit

Postby ozzie » Fri Mar 02, 2007 6:37 am

I am female and don't know too much about vehicle engines and nothing about ford transits ...... but we have a 98 td transit that had a light come on, it became sluggish and has got worse and it started acting like it has a turbo timer (none has ever been fitted) so it was taken to a ford dealer where a computer diagnostic came up with codes P1170, P1172 and P1176 - apparently all relating to the 'fuel pump' which they recommended we replace. We replaced it (not at ford) and the problem was not fixed. it has since been taken to a fuel injection specialist who says it needs a new fuel injector pump - don't know why ford didn't specify this. we have been quoted about $7000 aussie to fix this. of course i am worried this won't fix it either, but have been told 110% guarantee this will fix the problem - not in writing though - any ideas, anyone?!!

always get the garage that does the scan to do the repair or you'll have no comeback at all - as said the injection pump is the general direction these codes are pointing you

P1170 - fuel shut off solenoid
P1172 - injection pump rotor position sensor/fuel quantity adjuster - excess fuel
P1176 - injection pump cam ring position sensor

multiple codes like this can sometimes be caused by bad connections in the large multiplug to the injection pump so it's always worth a look - if it's got the old style big round plug make sure it's clipped together properly they do have a habit of getting loose if someones broken the locking ring

Thank you all for your help.
MrMPuk - Ford actually put in writing a fuel pump - stupid us didn't know the difference.
Motorwise - Ford, where we had the scan, actually advised us not to get the repair done there!
zoz from oz - can you give us a contact/starting point for where to get that going rate? we're in WA but it would obviously be cheaper to freight the part from east ourselves!
thanks again

 Before you pull out the pump, do us a favour, and electronically disconect the EGR Valve  (very easy to do) and now see if the red light still comes on :!:
