Upgrading the door speakers

I just did this today and fitted the Focal 165's, I found 9 fixings holding the panel on...


Being the cheapskate that I am, I couldn't stretch to Dynamat so instead I used roofing flashing tape- cost a tenner!




I did have one problem though, not being too clued up on the world of stereos, the speakers are marked + & - but how do I know which are which on the van loom? I tried them both ways and to be honest, I couldn't really tell much difference!

Nice job. That screw right at the top is a real bugger to get out.

The problem with using roof flashing in cars is that it eventually dries, cracks and then falls off. It can also smell a bit in the summer. Dynamat uses butyl rather than bitumen to avoid this.

I've never used that flashing before, but had seen someone else suggest it on another forum so I'll let you know how it fairs during next summer...
The top screw is actually pretty easy, you just need to take out the window switch first, then its very easy to get on it!

Been out to fill up with diesel and the sounds is more crisp and clear. The quailty is superb.

It lacks in Bass really and that's the main sore point!

Are you sure that you didn't end up putting the positive wire to the wrong tag on one of the speakers Lack of bass is a classic symptom of "out-of phase" speakers

No i used the 9v battery trick to test if the speaker pops out or sucks in

Yes I saw that but although the new speakers have the positive and negative marked, theres nothing to differentiate the wires from the van.

Can you not turn the radio on and the put a volt meter on the ends to earth and see which one is supplying the feed. that will be the POS.

You need to correctly set your time zone in board preferences

After watching the video, i understood how a speaker works. So when i connected my new speakers i could watch if it was correctly wired or not. As it happens they were not wired correctly.

Just to check, 165mm are 6.5" speakers? If so, yay! I have a set kicking around looking sorry for themselves.

Has anyone replaced the stock tweeters?

Planning my speaker install this weekend, so will, update when done. Lots of useful info here.

How did you get on?

The main things I wondered about were:

1. do I need to worry about crossovers or are there already factory ones?
2. Do I need to buy a specific size? Will they fit easily or need to be hot glued in or similar?
3. Is it even worth bothering with?


Since we're here, an open question - I'm planning on installing a sub to reinforce the low end, and I'm going to use the front speaker wires as the source (my amp has speaker level inputs). Has anyone tapped in to the stock speaker wiring like this before? Any gotchas I need to be aware of or tips?
