Mk1 and Mk2 side loading door hinge position!

Postby Luke » Wed Oct 12, 2005 9:02 pm

While i was building my mk1 i found out some information which some of you may find usefull!!

Mk1 and Mk2 side loading doors are not the same!!
I had a good replacement mk2 phase 1 door for my van and i found it would not fit the mk1 pillar!! i found this chart/drawing that i did at the time so i thought i'd post it on here!!

strangely enough the nos door i did get was off a mk2 it has a mk2 handle boss, yet it fitted my mk1 pillar!! :? so basically if you are replacing your sld beware there are 2 different types!!! :D

I would say it was possable to cut and redrill the door!! - certanly easyer than the post, i would have thought! thats what i was going to do but i found a mk2 door with the mk1 spacings! :?
also i didnt mention before the actual hinges are different aswel mk2 and i would say you need the hinges for the pillar not the door cos the angle they open at is slightly different!! i tried to fit the mk2 hinges to mine (they look better) but the door would twist as it opened!! :( not good!! :D

very very interesting, this might answer a couple of my questions i had on this .... my top hinge seems to be very close to the right hand edge of the hole, other than that, considering mine was a mix and match it fits really well :) ... still gonna print this for reference and have a quick measure up on my van

EDIT! this needs to be moved/copied over to the tech guides sections, because it is invaluable info really
