Mk6 Conversion Questions

Postby Bustrucket » Thu Feb 05, 2015 10:41 pm

I'm looking at buying a Mk6 (ideally medium wheelbase, high roof) to convert to and regularly use as a camper.

Couple of questions;

Heat - I'm planning on stuffing the van with insulation behind the ply panels and roof, but what electric heaters can I fit? I'm not looking for something that'll be capable of turning the van into a sauna, just something that'll take the edge off the cold. I'd love to fit a Webasto/Eberspacher type heater but they're out of my budget.

Electrics - I need to run a pair of phone chargers and an iPad charger, as well as a couple of interior lights and a 12v kettle. All of these could be run off a multi-way 12v adaptor wired directly to the battery. On the 'nice to have' list is a fridge and a toaster. Would leisure batteries and a split charge system be capable of running a small fridge?

Any advice appreciated!

Unless you are going to be on a mains hook up, forget any sort of electric devices that heat. Be that heaters (radiators), kettles, or toasters! For these you need to look at something powered by gas or liquid fuel (diesel/paraffin).

A basic camping stove will heat your water, cook your food, and you can toast on it too. You can even use it for heating but you'd need to leave a window open for ventilation!
