90 bhp RWD 4th gear missing, and a few other things!!!

Postby Leighmondo » Thu Apr 12, 2007 7:55 pm

What is it with warranties, whether its an ipod or a 22ft long Transit the moment the warranty runs out things start going wrong and just seem to get worse!
My 54 reg truck (feb 2005) passed the magic 100K about two weeks ago and has been nothing but trouble since, but today things have got alot worse.
I'd already done about 150 miles today with absolutely no hint of anything going wrong but as i drew up a slip road after being on the motorway in 5th for about an hour (Crawley to Maidstone) i dropped down into 4th and there was just a clonk, no bangs, no grinding just one small clonk. Now i have no 4th gear at all. Every other gear still works perfectly, i did another 150 odd miles after the incident without a problem, except hills!
Has this happened to anyone else? Was it a simple fix or a full stripdown job?
Other problems that i have with my truck:
Recently it has randomly just refused to start, it turns over well enough but sounds awful and both the LCD screens just start going mad. Also the speedo and rev needle start juddering. When this happens it just keeps doing this over and over no matter how many times you try. To cure it all you have to do is connect a small car battery to the two points under the bonnet and it fires straight away. Yet when it was serviced yesterday (somthing i forgot to mention earlier) the mechanic said he could find any fault with either the battery or alternator and as such would not replace either (bloody lease companies!).
Again has anybody else encountered this problem? Any help would be greatly recieved
Lastly just a small thing. Sometimes when its started up it sounds like a bag of nails and is totally unresponsive for anything from 5 to 20 seconds. It doesn't matter how much you pump the accelerator it just sits there sounding like its about to break. Then eventually it just goes back to normal. I know this cant be anything too major because its been like it for about 50K now i just wondered if anybody out there had found a cure for it?
Sorry if i've warbled on a bit this is my first post i'll try to make later ones less like a novel!
Cheers

mine does this sometimes, and has even been known to stall if you try to move off.
sounds like timing chain tensioner a bit lazy in building up required pressure,
its hydraulic ( or so i believe ) and once its pressurised it takes out the slack in the timing chain, its the chain you can hear rattling.
