New Mk6 owner questions.

Postby Jim Archer » Sun Jul 12, 2015 10:19 pm

Recently picked up a 02 plate 125 350 2.4 LWB and having driven it for a few days I'd just want to check a few issues I have with it - previous van was a TD conversion SWB Mk5.

Gearbox a bit vague - 5 speed - lever seems to centre over 5th/4th if that doesn't sound daft, 3rd hard to find unless very careful, 'dog leg' to find 4th (or reverse, depending on how it feels ....) reverse hard to find when actually wanted - is there a gate I haven't figured out?

No 2.5DI type guts in it - I appreciate it's a big old girl with a tall diff, but it's a bit lacking in the throttle response and bottom end grunt departments. Normal? I remember a work Mk7 135 being the same. I'm assuming it's the TDDI motor as no electrics to injectors, can it be mapped/remapped?

Keeps revving for a second or so occaisionally when you lift off and/or changing gear.

Has it got glow plugs? There's a light comes up on the dash, but only as long as the other 'check' lights do.

Occaisional not starting - fires a couple of cylinders and then dies, and/or a bit of a misfire before it settles, there was air in the fuel filter check gauge thingy but seems to have gone.

Have to say, for a big van it handles and rides very nicely.

The tddi has got mechanical injectors, but it's an Ecu controlled electronic pump that will remap very well,

The delayed Revving issue could be a faulty electronic pedal, fairly common :D

They do have glow plugs, but I'd check the fuel filter and housing unit for air leaks as well, as there fairly common failures too.

125 Need plugs for starting .You may need to advance the pump timing a tad also.Best get codes read for starters and take it from there Jim.It should have oodles of power, well mine does

Re-map - I take it Martin Vantuner is the go to man? Quite happy with the way it drives once up to speed, it's just getting the bugger rolling, guess turbo'd DIs spoil you take way :D

Gear selection is the bit that's bothering me most now, is it a linkage? or direct like the MT75 in the smiley? It feels like the gates are in a pissed 'W' pattern rather than 'H'. And as for bloody reverse.....

Gearbox/selector sounds suspect as selector is direct into box no linkage on the RWD vans. As said starting may be glow plugs, they prob failed long ago, and the 125 is the only di mk6 that struggles without them, although chain tensioner issues can also cause hard starts or stalled starts. As can pump starting to fail, which could also be causing power issues, but they aren't the quickest away anyway, and a remap might be all that's needed. Throttle is almost definately pedal playing up, easy fix by changing that.

Oh, and glow plug light does not bare any resemblance to when the glow plugs are actually working! It's just the engine management light on these. As plugs stay on after light has extinguished for cold start emissions reasons.

It's not that there's a 'lack' of power, more that there isn't the instant response of a turbo'd 2.5DI - what's the point in having a turbo diesel if you have to keep working away at the loud pedal? :D
