This is what Ford says, the haynes manual is right, althought the torque setting is quite low the extra 90 degrees makes it quite tight.

Head bolts are 70Nm + 90 degrees.

You should have done the valve clearences before when you did the head, as you moved them when removing the rockers! Are you doing them hot or cold?

Also another thing to check if it's still smoking as you fitted a new head, do you know what the enigne was like that the head came off of as it might be the valve stem oil seals!

the haynes manuals says the same for hot or cold valve clearances.. the head was a brand new head which came from a local person who used to run a fleet of mk5 td's so it is definately the correct one!! wish i had left it alone but i couldnt put up with the blue smoke the stem seals had gone!! also my first post somone mentioned one of my probs could be that the rings had gone they say said to check i had to pour diesel into the bores and see what happens whats is meant to happen????

Had the stem seals gone on your old head? Is that why you changed the head? Surely it would have been easlier just to change the seals?

When you say new head, had it been stored?

If you poor diesel in the bores and then leave it for a while and come back if the diesel is still at the same level then the rings are ok if it has dropped then the rings could be knacked.

should drain evenly - not sure how long it should take - it will be quite a while - but be aware when doing this the diesel will drain into the oil - so remove that first then drain the diesel out of the sump - then put the oil back in!! :D

i tried it when i done the head last week 2 inner cylinders took over 5 hours to drain through the 2 outer cylinders took about 4 hours to drain is this likely to be a problem?? i changed the oil as it was full of water

When you fitted the headgasket did you clean the block surface fully to make sure all trace of the old head gasket were gone :?:
