Many problems of my Transit Mk6

Postby GattoDelleNevi » Sun Sep 27, 2015 2:34 pm

Hello to everyone, i have many problem with my Ford Transit Mk6 (2002) 90 T350 (TDdi).
:D
Van travels well but emits strange noises from the engine, the starter is often not able to turn on (scratch).
I also noticed that the radiator fan turns crooked and trembling.

I brought the truck in Ford dealership and made me a quote with the work to be done:

- Conversion kit: from DMF to SMF conversion kit single-mass flywheel, EUROCODE 600.
- Ring / radial seal: motor shaft.
- Starter: spare part regenerated (not new) EUROCODE 310.
- Master Cylinder: clutch, LHD 2WD (manual clutch).

The list does not put the radiator fan to adjust, probably dealership did not notice it was running very badly.

The cost is € 1,500 (£ 1,100) for all the work, of which 500 € (368 €) for the labor. We will then add the repair cost of the repair of the fan.

I ask you what you think of these repairs?
They are serious and urgent problems?
Or I could avoid doing something.
Are common problems in this van or not?
The prices are good? (I know it is hard to judge since I'm Italian).

Thank you all!
I enclose a photo of the dealership quote

It looks suspiciously like an EGR blanking plate from a Mk5 2.5 Di "banana" engine to me, although I'm happy to be corrected.

Not sure what the causes of your issues are (I can't watch the video at work), or whether the work suggested by the dealer will fix them, but EUR 367 for replacing the starter?

An aftermarket rebuilt starter is unlikely to be more than EUR 150 (and probably under EUR100), and fitting it should be about 10 minutes for an experienced mechanic. Even a semi-competent DIYer ought to be able to do it in under an hour.

Update - now I've read your posts properly

You have a 90 T350, which I believe is a 2.4 l engine, which is confirmed by the dealer's quotation. The Amazon listing says that the blanking plate is for a 2.0 l engine, although there are others on Amazon that claim to fit 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4 engines, so it looks like they're probably all the same size. You could just go and fit it, because it'll be pretty obvious whether it fits or not.

Thanks a lot! :)
It's the 2.4 Duratorq TDDi (no common-rail).
Thanks for the advice on the cost of the starter, I will ask a lower price.
However, the EGR plate I received, I am attaching a photo.
Then I try to see if it fits as a form, otherwise it another try.

I update you also about what happened yesterday:
while traveling the clutch has hardened suddenly, I tried to push it strong but stood rooted.
I also tried to raise it by hand but had become extremly soft.
I called Wrecker and we went to the Ford dealer, now the van is there and they are doing me a quote about the problems.
Probably the pump clutch is gone. I will fix everything well, so that by the 105,000 km actual will get to 200,000 km! :D

I don't understand italian, but please make a list of the parts you are going to replace

About the started motor, i went yesterday to FORD dealership, and they said the starter motor was less than 240€ - ORIGINAL AND NEW ( i'm from Portugal)

That price was with an unknowned discount they said they made for me

I wouldn't even buy that, there are used originals on ebay for 60€ and there easy to install

Looking at others on eBay, the EGR plate looks like it is probably correct, but the best way to find out will be to try it out. You shouldn't even need to remove the bolts entirely - just loosen them off and slip the plate in.

On the starter motor, you can ask the Ford dealer for a cheaper price, but I doubt you'll get very far. If you're not confident about changing it yourself (it's a pretty easy job), then get a generic non-dealer garage to do it - it doesn't need to be done by the dealer who will probably insist on fitting new, genuine Ford parts.

Whilst there is a bit of a translation issue on the clutch issues, I think your description suggests a problem with the clutch master or slave cylinders.

For anyone else, the translation of the quotation is:

Dual-to-Single Mass Flywheel conversion kit - EUR 467.42

Ring Seal (white) (I assume this is the main crankshaft seal) - EUR 89.84

Starter motor - EUR 367.67

Clutch Master Cylinder - EUR 86.47

I think that they are also adding on an estimated EUR for labour (for the whole lot), so I think these are just prices for the parts. Which makes the starter motor even more eye-wateringly expensive - even a genuine Bosch remanufactured one is only EUR 230.

I can't really tell whether the noise on your video is strange or not, it seems perfectly normal, with maybe a bit of distortion and recording artefacts.

I carry the things I'm about to replace:

- Radiator fan.

I think I will do everything in the dealership.

Thank you so much, you've been very kind. :)

Exactly! You have translated all right.
I insist to lower the price of the motor at least. but I'll still do all the ford.
Now the van was already there and just waiting my confirmation.

Later i will try the EGR plate.
