Key fob failure

Postby Bull Bus » Mon Nov 23, 2015 4:33 pm

Has anyone else had their key fobs fail? My fob wouldn't unlock or lock the doors this morning, and when I manually unlocked the doors it set the alarm off.

When the key is in the ignition, the alarm stops, and the van will start as normal. Tried the spare fob (which is never used normally), and that didn't work either).

Rang the stealers, and they suggested the battery needed changing. The van is only six months old so I'd be surprised if it was the battery. Anyway, looked in the manual and can't see any instructions on battery changing. The keys are self-charging I believe, so I doubt that it's recommend for the user to change batteries.

Can anyone confirm whether the batteries are replaceable, and has anyone had similar issues with their fobs? Any solutions?

Thanks in anticipation.

Key fob failure

Postby Alar » Mon Nov 23, 2015 4:37 pm

I've had the van for 1,5 years and have used only one key and it still works fine. I can unlock/lock the car from 30-40meters
Still has the original battery

Can't be the batteries on both key fobs. Usually these batteries last more than three years when in daily use. It looks like you need to search in the antenna and not the sender.

What are the odds the dealer will make him buy new fobs before they will accept there may be a fault with the van? That will also be after they try to blame his home WiFi and sunspots first.

The rechargeable battery should last years and I'm certain that both of them wouldn't fail at the same time.

Thanks for the replies guys. Strangely, when I went to the van this morning, the fob worked fine and has been all day.

One of those things, I guess.

I used my spare for the first time today after it sat in a drawer for a year and it worked fine.

Started playing up again - booked back in the dealer to be looked at. I'll bet it'll start working fine again just before I get to the workshop....

Does it only happen in one place? Wondering if it could be interference, I once had a lightbulb which would mess with the TV remote when it was on. I'd hope key fobs are more advanced but if something nearby is emitting enough power it will throw it.

I have too had the same fault with the bull bus, came out on Thursday morning and nothing. Tried the other fob this too was no good

I got in with the hykee key and opened all doors but found the liftgate would not open. I suspected this to be the problem as I had 4 spare wheels in the boot and one of them had moved and was pushing on the tailgate, a quick run up the road with some emergency stops cured the problem. When I eventually got the tailgate opened I could see on my newly carpeted panels where the wheel had been forcing against the rear door. Lesson learnt  tie down any loose luggage in the rear compartment before driving off.

Does this van have two batteries under the seat?

Is it nescessary to use both keys from time to time so the uncharged one doesn't die all together ??

Sorry Altransit,

I have just seen your reply, yes it is fitted with the 2 batteries under the drivers seat.

Thanks

Your auxilliary battery may be failing, and needs replacing.

I think that it's the rear one in a Custom (It's the front one in a Mk7!)
